Escaping The Sewers in Lord of the Rings: Gollum

Chapter 5 of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum focuses on Gollum's escape from the Dark Tower. Despite years of preparation, Gollum's plan hits a snag when he reunites with the Grashneg and falls into the Sewers beneath the Tower of Light.

Players take control of Gollum and must navigate through the Sewers to continue their journey out of Mordor. However, the puzzle is made more challenging by the fact that the Grashneg cannot swim, and players must find a way to help him reach the other side. The Sewers puzzle is considered one of the toughest challenges in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, with players needing to use their problem-solving skills to progress.

Here's how to solve the Sewers puzzle in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.

To progress further into the Sewers, Gollum needs to climb down the ladder onto the lower platform and take a left turn. Once there, he must take a leap of faith into the water below, swim across to the other side, and climb up onto the square platform using the ladder. From there, he needs to sprint across the wall to the right to reach the lever on the next platform. By pulling this lever, the water level will rise, creating a bridge for Grashneg to move forward in the Sewers.

To bring the water level back up, players need to rotate Gollum and activate Companion Mode to guide the Grashneg across the bridge, up the ladder, and towards the next lever.

After the water level rises again, Gollum should head towards the wall ahead by turning left and swim towards it. He can then climb up to reach the next area. Alternatively, if he turns right, he can interact with the lever located next to the edge. This will lower a second bridge for the Grashneg to cross.

To proceed further, players need to turn around and face the ladder. They must enter Companion Mode again to instruct the Grashneg to pull the lever at the top. This action will cause the water to rise for the third time.

To reach the final two levers, Gollum must climb the somewhat submerged ladder where the Grashneg pulled the lever. Once at the top, he can turn left and spot the levers, one to the left and another to the right. Using Gollum Sense, players will also identify three barrels floating in the water, two of which are necessary to reach the remaining levers.

To access the platform on the right, Gollum needs to jump into the water and approach the floating barrels situated next to the rightmost lever. Afterward, he must push these barrels towards the crane on the left-hand side of the room and position them beside the rope emerging from the water.

After completing the task, Gollum needs to swim back to the barrels on the right-hand side of the room and activate Companion Mode to direct the Grashneg to pull the lever again. As a result, the water level will begin to decrease, and if Gollum was previously floating next to the rope, he can now stand on stable ground and reach the subsequent lever.

After shutting the first water gate, Gollum must plunge into the water, swim towards the right, and ascend the ladder that leads to the Sewers entrance. Once he reaches the top, he should pivot and jump onto the wooden walkway that is floating on the water.

Using Companion Mode, the Grashneg can be commanded to pull the lever once again, raising the walkway on which Gollum is standing so that he can finally reach the last lever.

Once the final lever is pulled, Gollum can make his way back to the platform below the Grashneg. From there, he can descend to the lowest point of the Sewers using the ladder on the opposite side of the wall.

The Grashneg proceeds to approach a gate, which he opens before climbing another ladder. At the top of the ladder, both he and Gollum's two selves can exit the Sewers and continue their journey. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is currently available on multiple gaming platforms, including PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A Nintendo Switch release is also in the works and expected to arrive later this year.
