Emily Blunt has taken the opportunity to address the body-shaming comments she made about a Chili's server during a talk show appearance in 2012. In a statement to We on Friday, October 20, the 40-year-old actress expressed her disbelief and regret, acknowledging that she was shocked by her own words. Blunt expressed her deep dismay at having made such insensitive and hurtful remarks that were completely irrelevant to the story she was attempting to tell on the talk show.

She continued: "I have always considered myself as someone who would never intentionally upset anyone, so I can't understand why I said something like that in the moment. It goes against everything I believe in. I deeply regret it and apologize for any pain it may have caused. I was old enough to know better."

During a September 2012 appearance on The Johnathan Ross Show, Blunt shared a story about dining at a Chili's restaurant. When discussing the meal, the actress made an inappropriate comment about the appearance of her server. This was prompted by Ross, who is now 62, jokingly saying, "If you go to Chili's, you can see why so many of our American friends are overweight."

The girl serving me was extremely large. I believe she received complimentary meals at Chili's. Ross quickly mentioned that there was nothing wrong with that, and Blunt concluded her story. The Golden Globe winner ended her anecdote by imitating a Southern accent and mentioning that the waitress inquired if anyone had ever told her that she resembled Emily Blunt.

“And I said, ‘I have heard that, yes,’” she said, to which the employee then replied, “Are you Emily Blunt?”

Blunt's remarks caused backlash after the clip resurfaced online, with social media users accusing her of fatphobia and demanding an apology.

"Emily Blunt, once one of my favorite actresses, has now disappointed me with her fatphobic and unfunny behavior. It is disheartening to see her mock a server's size in a way that adds nothing to the story. Such behavior is unacceptable." expressed one user on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Another user shared the video and commented, "I never expected Emily Blunt to display such blatant fatphobia in 2023, but unfortunately, here we are."
