Emily Blunt has discussed the delay in the progress of Edge of Tomorrow 2, despite plans for the sci-fi sequel being announced in 2015. The original film, based on the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill, was a success, earning over $370 million at the box office. However, although Tom Cruise had an idea for the sequel, it never advanced beyond the scripting stage.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Blunt shared her thoughts on the long-awaited sequel. She expressed the need for the film to be just as ambitious as its predecessor in order to succeed. Blunt questioned the potential for further development of the time loop concept that was central to the first film. Nevertheless, she expressed her excitement at the possibility of reuniting with Cruise for the sequel.

Well, I would be absolutely thrilled to participate in another project like this. While I am uncertain about the timing and logistics, the desire to be a part of it is undeniable. I do have concerns about the strain it may put on my back, but in the most delightful and endearing way possible because [Tom Cruise] was truly a wonderful person to work with. However, I believe we all understood that I needed to toughen up and persevere. Otherwise, the entire filming process would have been overshadowed by the constant desire for a lighter suit that simply wasn't possible. Nevertheless, I genuinely cherished the experience and would be ecstatic to collaborate with Doug [Liman] once again. We would need to create something equally ambitious as the initial installment. How can we further explore the concept of reliving the same day? What new framework can we introduce?

Edge of Tomorrow garnered praise for its humor and fast-paced action sequences. It was no surprise that Cruise expressed interest in a sequel to the 2014 hit. While the film drew inspiration from established sci-fi tropes, Liman's creation managed to weave a clever narrative that breathed new life into these often recycled ideas. Blunt and Cruise's dynamic performances added to the film's appeal, solidifying Edge of Tomorrow as a beloved choice among fans.

The director of the film, Liman, had initially agreed to work on the sequel in 2016. However, it wasn't until 2019 that he finally announced the completion of the script. Liman had the idea to name the follow-up "Live, Die Repeat & Repeat" and suggested that it would be a sequel with elements of a prequel, indicating the continued use of time manipulation. However, in early 2022, surprising news emerged that Warner Bros. was secretly considering creating a television series based on "Edge of Tomorrow." Not much is known about the potential adaptation at this point, as the news only came to light due to a lawsuit filed against the studio by the original production company of the film, Village Roadshow. With the lawsuit and Warner Bros.'s subsequent merger with Discovery, Inc., it's uncertain if these plans will ever come to fruition. If Warner Bros. decides not to pursue the TV series, it could potentially open up the opportunity for Blunt and Cruise to make their highly anticipated return in "Edge of Tomorrow 2."
