Discover the Unbelievable Story behind Baylan Skoll's Mind-Blowing Custom Lightsaber

Baylan Skoll's extraordinary lightsaber design in Star Wars draws inspiration from the iconic Ray Stevenson, resulting in a stunning and unparalleled creation that sets it apart from any other lightsabers in the galaxy

Summary

Baylan Skoll's lightsaber in Ahsoka is one of the most unique in Star Wars history, partially influenced by actor Ray Stevenson.

The lightsaber design showcases a unique color combination, blending subtle tones of orange to symbolize Baylan's intricate loyalty to both the Jedi and the dark side.

In addition, Baylan's lightsaber sets itself apart with its elongated hilt and additional weight, potentially indicating the introduction of an innovative lightsaber variation in upcoming Star Wars ventures.

Baylan Skoll's lightsaber in Ahsoka, a Star Wars show on Disney+, is one of the most distinct in the Star Wars universe. It was partially influenced by the actor who portrayed Baylan, Ray Stevenson. In the series, Ahsoka Tano embarks on a live-action adventure to stop the potential return of Grand Admiral Thrawn. While the show features familiar Star Wars characters, it also introduces original characters like Baylan. Baylan's intriguing backstory as a Jedi who turned to the dark side adds depth to his character. Tragically, Stevenson passed away before the premiere of Ahsoka, but his legacy can be seen in various aspects of the show.

During an interview with Screen Rant's Rob Keyes at Destination D23, Josh Roth, the props master, revealed how Stevenson played a role in the design of Baylan's lightsaber. Roth explained that he and film artist Doug Chiang originally created the lightsaber designs. However, when Stevenson saw the initial design, he suggested changing the pommel, which is the knob at the end of the lightsaber's hilt. Roth and Chiang incorporated Stevenson's suggestion, resulting in a final design that reflects his creative input. You can watch the video of Roth's statement and presentation below.

One of the most exciting aspects of my job is introducing the actors to the lightsaber and witnessing their expressions as we ignite it for the first time; the sheer joy on their faces is truly remarkable. Ray had a particular vision for his initial lightsaber design, especially regarding the pommel. Working closely with Doug Chiang and Dave Filoni, we were able to fulfill Ray's creative choice and modify the pommel accordingly. This collaboration not only incorporates the artistic influences of Dave Filoni, Doug Chiang, and myself, but also encompasses Ray's unique creative input. Hence, this lightsaber holds significant sentimental value for me.

It's truly moving to witness not only Stevenson's remarkable acting skills in Ahsoka but also his significant creative impact on Baylan. Additionally, his influence on the design of the lightsaber is intriguing, as it resulted in Baylan possessing one of the most extraordinary lightsabers in the Star Wars universe. The initial element that caught the viewers' attention was the lightsaber's distinctive color. Unlike the typical red lightsabers wielded by the Sith, Baylan's lightsaber features hints of orange in addition to its red hue.

Filoni later confirmed that this intentional decision reflected the complexity of Baylan. Formerly a Jedi, Baylan turned to the dark side after Order 66. However, his loyalty to the dark side seems incomplete, and his motivations and actions are more intricate than the typical Sith's pure evil. The unique orange lightsaber wielded by Baylan and his apprentice, Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno), has not been seen before in the live-action Star Wars universe. But this is not the only distinctive feature of Baylan's lightsaber.

In addition, Baylan's lightsaber has an exceptionally long hilt compared to the majority of lightsabers in the Star Wars universe. The complex secondary antagonist is frequently seen gripping the long handle with both hands, suggesting the unusual length and weight of his lightsaber. As of now, Ahsoka's story has not provided an explanation as to why Baylan's lightsaber design deviates from the norm, but it could mark the beginning of a new kind of lightsaber in future live-action Star Wars projects. Ultimately, the uniqueness of Baylan's lightsaber in Ahsoka sets it apart in the Star Wars universe and is further enhanced by Stevenson's influence.
