Discover the Exciting Secrets of Hearthstone's New Titan, Amitus!

Game Rant discusses the development of Hearthstone's new Titan, Amitus, and its integration into Warcraft lore, emphasizing the distinction between Hearthstone characters and their potential inclusion in Warcraft canon

Highlights

Hearthstone's Titans expansion introduces a new Titan, Amitus, for the Paladin class, adding to the established pantheon of Titans in Warcraft.

The Hearthstone team's intention in designing Amitus was to provide a narrative explanation for why this Titan had not been encountered before in Warcraft's story and to establish her position among the other Titans.

Despite not being officially part of the Warcraft canon, Blizzard ensured that Amitus's character seamlessly integrated into the Warcraft setting, creating possibilities for future interactions.

Hearthstone's recent Titans expansion introduced 145 new cards inspired by Warcraft's revered Titans, the mighty guardians of the planets. These renowned characters, along with the treacherous titan Sargeras, have been a part of World of Warcraft for years, but now they make their debut in Hearthstone. Among the well-known Titans, a never-before-seen Titan has been created exclusively for the Paladin class.

In an interview with Game Rant, Lead Narrative Designer Valerie Chu and Lead Designer Chadd Nervig discussed the design process behind Hearthstone's Titans expansion, with a focus on the newly introduced Titan, Amitus. They delved into the team's objectives in terms of gameplay and storytelling when creating Amitus, as well as how she harmonizes with the established Titans that players are already familiar with. Furthermore, they discussed the potential for Amitus to join the official Warcraft canon in the future.

Hearthstone's Amitus Fits In Warcraft's Lore

In developing the character Amitus for the Titans expansion, the Hearthstone team sought to provide a logical reason for this Titan's absence in Warcraft's storyline. Each Titan embodies specific qualities, such as Eonar's connection with nature and life, or Norgannon's mastery of knowledge and arcane magic. Amitus, in her role as a peacemaker and "champion of harmony," had her existence disrupted by Sargeras' betrayal, which ultimately led to her mysterious disappearance.

We are thrilled to introduce another female character, as Eonar was previously the sole representative. We aim to explore the potential appearances of these distinct personality archetypes that align with the Paladins. The concept of a character who possesses immense power but is bound to peace and harmony can serve as an explanation for those in the tavern who question the presence of these Titans. It clarifies why this particular Titan is no longer present, as harmony was shattered by Sargeras' betrayal of the Pantheon.

The Titan's absence could potentially be justified by this explanation, suggesting why she existed in the past but no longer does.

Although players primarily encounter Amitus through flavor text and card art, it is evident that Blizzard carefully considered introducing a new Titan for Hearthstone's Paladin class. Given the significance of naming a new Titan, it is reasonable for them to give extra consideration to this character.

Hearthstone Characters Don't Always Become Warcraft Canon

Amitus, although she has lore justification and a backstory established by Blizzard, is not considered part of the official Warcraft canon. While Hearthstone is based on Warcraft, the game's characters and events are mostly separate from the Warcraft universe. Only occasionally does original Hearthstone content cross over into World of Warcraft. However, Blizzard ensured that Amitus could plausibly exist within the Warcraft setting.

We strive to create characters that fit into the world of Warcraft, but they may not be officially recognized. Our goal is to make them feel natural. Rafaam, for example, is a character that could easily be imagined in World of Warcraft. They still embody the Hearthstone style and possess quirky personalities, but as long as it doesn't feel out of place, it feels like a good fit.

Sometimes, the World of Warcraft team gets inspired to include characters like Elise and Reno Jackson in the official canon. It's exciting to see these characters become a part of the game. In Amitus' case, we didn't have the same expectation, but we wanted to create a character that fits into the world realistically.

Within the Warcraft universe, there are references to unnamed Titans existing throughout the universe. Just like Azeroth, Titans are born from world souls, so it's highly likely that there are other Titans that players haven't encountered yet. Whether World of Warcraft players will ever come across Amitus remains uncertain, but there is certainly room for new Titans to enter the story.

Hearthstone is available on Mobile and PC.
