With Marvel's Spider-Man 2 set to release this autumn, the tremendous success of Across the Spider-Verse at the box office, and the anticipation for the third film, being a Spider-Man fan has never been more thrilling. Sony's recent confirmation of Kevin Feige's statement about a fourth Tom Holland-led MCU Spider-Man movie only adds to the excitement.
The Home Trilogy has left us with hints and clues about the future direction of the series. However, with numerous comic storylines to choose from, the question remains: which path should be taken?
Should Spider-Man 4 Focus on Miles Morales or the Symbiote?
In 2017's Spider-Man: Homecoming, Miles Morales' presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was confirmed. In the film, Holland's Spider-Man investigates the illegal trade of extraterrestrial weapons, which leads him to Aaron Davis, portrayed by Donald Glover. Following an uncomfortable interrogation, Davis reluctantly agrees to assist Spider-Man due to his connection to a "nephew" residing in the same neighborhood.
Fans of Miles Morales in any medium are familiar with Aaron Davis as Miles' Uncle, who is also known as "The Prowler." To emphasize this connection, there is a post-credits scene in the film where Glover's Davis contacts Miles by his name. Consequently, speculation has arisen among fans regarding when the beloved hero will make his proper debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
One potential storyline that would allow Holland's Spider-Man to shine is the Symbiote Arc.
After the phenomenal success of No Way Home, Sony and Marvel face the daunting task of surpassing their previous achievement. Tom Holland himself has expressed his desire to continue portraying Spider-Man indefinitely, but acknowledges that if they cannot surpass the brilliance of the last film, it may be wise to conclude the series on a high note. In light of the current excitement surrounding Miles Morales or the enduring fascination with symbiotes and their intricate lore, there are two promising avenues to explore.
As if emphasizing the choice between these two paths, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 showcases Miles Morales and a symbiote-enhanced Peter Parker collaborating side by side. Based on early visuals and trailers, it can be assumed that Miles will play a role in helping his mentor free himself from the symbiote's influence, ultimately leading to the birth of Venom.
Sony Has Hinted at a Live-Action Miles Morales Movie
In a recent interview, Amy Pascal, a renowned film producer and studio executive at Sony, revealed exciting news for Spider-Man fans. She confirmed that a fourth film featuring Tom Holland as the iconic superhero is in the works. Additionally, Pascal announced that a live-action film showcasing the beloved character Miles Morales is also in development. This decision comes as no surprise, considering the massive success of Spider-Verse and Sony's desire to capitalize on the public's growing fascination with Miles Morales.
Given the groundwork already laid and the clear desire of fans to see Spider-Man's live-action adventures continue in the MCU, it is logical to assume that a Miles Morales movie would also be set in this cinematic universe. Currently, the rights to Spider-Man still belong to Sony, and the collaboration between the two studios for the current MCU films has been a unique and occasionally uncertain arrangement. Sony has previously demonstrated its willingness to assert its influence, even going so far as to threaten to remove Tom Holland's Spider-Man from the MCU in order to focus on their own separate Spider-Man universe, which received mixed reception. Although the current situation appears to be stable, it is highly probable that Sony has prioritized bringing Miles Morales into the MCU as soon as possible, making it a shared priority between Sony and Marvel.
No Way Home Teased the Symbiote Storyline
2021's No Way Home marked the culmination of Tom Holland's first Spider-Man trilogy, as Peter Parker made the ultimate sacrifice by erasing himself from the memories of the entire world. In an act of selflessness, Peter severed the connection between the multiverse and the MCU, preventing anyone who knew his secret identity from being pulled into his reality. From that moment on, Peter became nothing more than an anonymous face in the crowd, unknown to those who once cared for him.
In a post-credits scene, Tom Hardy's Venom appears as one of the visitors from another universe. He is seen sitting at a beachside bar in an undisclosed location, engaging in a conversation with the bartender. Hardy's character discusses the recent events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and expresses his determination to locate Spider-Man. However, before he can pursue his goal, Doctor Strange's spell transports him back to his original universe. Interestingly, a small fragment of the symbiote is left behind on the bar counter, and it subtly moves before the scene ends.
This scene in No Way Home serves as a continuation of a previous scene in Let There Be Carnage, where Eddie and Venom unexpectedly find themselves transported to the MCU. In that particular scene, they witness Holland's Spider-Man being unmasked on television by J. Jonah Jameson. Additionally, Venom displays a peculiar behavior by licking Peter Parker's image on the screen. When these two scenes are combined, the message becomes abundantly clear - the Symbiote Arc is about to unfold in the MCU.
Although Miles' training and the Symbiote Arc may appear to be conflicting directions, it doesn't necessarily mean that they cannot coexist. It is only fair for Holland's Spider-Man to have his own spotlight, while fans also deserve to see Miles in the MCU. Therefore, why not provide both of them with the opportunity they deserve?
Instead of rushing the storylines, Marvel should take their time if the fourth Spider-Man movie marks the start of a new trilogy and if Spider-Man is expected to appear in other MCU franchises. It would be beneficial to spread out the Symbiote Arc and Miles' training arc over several films. Instead of having Peter gain and remove the symbiote in a single film, similar to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, let him hold onto it for a while, as depicted in the comics.
At the same time, Spider-Man 4 could introduce Miles as an ordinary kid, perhaps attending Peter's old high school. The two characters would eventually cross paths, establishing Miles' admiration for the hero. The events in the first film could lay the foundation for the development of Miles' spider abilities, and the moment of the spider bite could be showcased in either the second or third film. This would be a special moment for MCU fans as they have not yet witnessed an onscreen spider bite, and giving this moment to Miles would be significant.
In due course, Peter's reliance on the symbiote would pose more and more challenges, and Miles, whether empowered or not, could assist him in overcoming it. The Marvel Cinematic Universe could draw inspiration from the Insomniac games, adding their own unique touch. Regardless, the arrival of both Miles and Venom is inevitable; it's just a matter of when.
