Daisy Ridley, who portrays Rey, reassured fans that the return of the Jedi Knight in an upcoming Star Wars film is a story that is truly worth telling. Ridley first portrayed Rey in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens and continued to play the character in the direct sequels, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
The English actor also played Rey in various related projects, such as the animated web series Star Wars Forces of Destiny, video games like Star Wars Battlefront II and Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the theme park attraction Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.
After the release of The Rise of Skywalker, Ridley's association with the franchise appeared to diminish, but her break turned out to be temporary. In April 2023, Lucasfilm revealed that Ridley would star in a new Star Wars movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Daisy Ridley opens up about Rey’s new “exciting” Star Wars story
During the promotion of her latest film, The Marsh King's Daughter, Ridley enthusiastically discussed her upcoming venture in a distant galaxy, rumored to be titled "Star Wars: A New Beginning."
During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley emphasized the importance of delving into the next chapter of Rey's story and expressed confidence that fans will find it thrilling once more information is revealed. She also mentioned that although she hasn't read a complete screenplay, Obaid-Chinoy's story overview left a strong impression on her.
Ridley later discussed the potential for the story to expand into a trilogy of films in a separate conversation with Collider. She also revealed that the Rey movie is at the forefront of Lucasfilm's Star Wars lineup. "I am aware of the storyline for one film. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that's all there is to it, but that's the information I was given," Ridley stated. "And I believe it will be the next film, I think."
"Again, I can't be certain about when production will resume due to potential strikes and other factors," Ridley added. "But as of now, I have knowledge of the story for one film and I think fans will be very pleased."
Ahsoka showrunner takes control of the Star Wars franchise
Lucasfilm is currently developing other big-screen blockbusters, including James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi and an untitled crossover project led by Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni. In addition to his own production, Filoni will also oversee Dawn of the Jedi and Ridley’s Rey movie as Lucasfilm’s new Chief Creative Officer.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Filoni mentioned the appointment and emphasized that he will primarily serve in an advisory role. He stated, "I’m not telling people what to do. But I do feel I’m trying to help them tell the best story that they want to tell. I need to be a help across the galaxy here, like a part of a Jedi Council almost."
