Chris Evans Opens Up About Playing Captain America: Find Out Why He Feared Making Mediocre Movies

Chris Evans expressed concern about portraying Captain America, fearing the possibility of being tied to subpar films and compromising his dedication to quality

Chris Evans, best known for his portrayal of Captain America in the Marvel superhero series, initially expressed hesitation towards accepting the role. In a recent piece for Vanity Fair, Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige revealed that Evans was offered a contract for nine movies without the need for an audition. However, Evans did not immediately agree to the offer.

"The offer itself was incredibly tempting," Evans stated. "It was the ultimate job offer, on such a grand scale. I felt obligated to decline. Seeing the images and costumes was undeniably thrilling."

Evans expressed his preference for privacy and expressed concern that the success of Captain America: The First Avenger would prevent him from taking time off to work on other projects. Initially, Evans felt confident in declining the role, until Robert Downey Jr., who portrays Iron Man, persuaded him otherwise. According to Vanity Fair, Downey Jr. assured Evans that starring in such a monumental film would not limit his acting prospects but rather open doors for him. Eventually, Evans reconsidered and agreed to appear in six films, comprising three Captain America movies and three Avengers films, as opposed to the original nine films.

Evans suggested that the thing you fear the most could be the very thing you should pursue. Despite this, the actor confessed to having doubts about accepting the role, even after committing to it. He believed that by doing so, he had sealed his fate and ruined his life. He found it hard to accept that this wasn't the trajectory he had envisioned for his career. However, Evans' perspective changed when he witnessed the exceptional caliber of the Captain America movies.

"The main concern that troubled me was the prospect of creating subpar films," he expressed. "I have no desire to produce low-quality movies and be legally bound to churn out trash."

Evans additionally discussed his dietary and fitness regimen aimed at preparing for the role of Captain America. The character, Steve Rogers, experiences a significant physical metamorphosis in the initial film, transitioning from a scrawny youngster to an immensely muscular figure. Achieving this required a dedicated commitment to rigorous training and substantial consumption of nourishment.

"He said that he was constantly eating. It may sound appealing, but in reality, it is not as enjoyable as cheeseburgers. Instead, he has to consume tasteless, plain chicken and rice. This leaves him feeling overly full, which is rather unpleasant."

Evans has concluded his role as Captain America, although he has not completely dismissed the possibility of reprising the role of America's beloved hero. However, for the time being, Evans expressed his desire to relax and unwind. "I would prefer to simply smoke a joint, listen to some music, and indulge in pottery," he revealed to GQ.

The next Captain America movie, 2024's Brave New World, features Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America.
