Chelsea have reached an agreement to acquire Lesley Ugochukwu, a midfielder, from Rennes for €27m (£23.1m). However, it is still undecided whether the 19-year-old will join Mauricio Pochettino's first-team squad or be sent out on loan.
There have been discussions about Ugochukwu temporarily joining Strasbourg, the Ligue 1 team where Chelsea has the majority ownership stake. Ugochukwu initially came through the academy at Rennes and has since played in 60 matches for the club, including 35 in various competitions last season.
The 19-year-old mainly operates in the role of a defensive midfielder and has earned six appearances for the French U19 national team.
Ugochukwu's signing would contribute to the ongoing revamp of Chelsea's midfield, as Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and N'Golo Kante are set to depart from the club this summer.

Chelsea is interested in signing Moises Caicedo, a talented midfielder from Brighton. According to a source at We News, Caicedo, who was acquired from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle for £4.5m in 2021, is highly regarded by Brighton. They consider him to be on par with Arsenal's record signing, Declan Rice, and are aiming to fetch around £100m for his transfer.
Chelsea were believed to be receiving positive signals regarding the 21-year-old's potential transfer to their team, pending an agreement between the clubs. It is unlikely that personal terms will pose an issue. At present, there are no ongoing discussions between the clubs, according to We News.
