Chelsea and Brighton have reached an agreement for the transfer of midfielder Moises Caicedo, setting a new British record of £115m. The initial payment by the Blues is £100m, with an additional £15m dependent on performance-related factors.
Caicedo has received authorization from Brighton to undergo a medical examination with Chelsea, scheduled to occur on Monday.
The midfielder will enter into an agreement for an eight-year contract, with the possibility of extending it for an additional year.
Liverpool had reached an agreement worth £111m to acquire Caicedo, however, the transfer collapsed when the player, aged 21, revealed his desire to join Chelsea instead. It was previously anticipated that Caicedo would undergo a medical examination in Liverpool on Friday, following Brighton's acceptance of Liverpool's bid before the midnight bid deadline on Thursday.
However, the Ecuadorian player had a change of heart and informed Liverpool, who had a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in their first Premier League match of the season on Sunday, that he was no longer interested in joining them. Instead, Caicedo decided to stay in London and expressed his desire to leave Brighton only for Chelsea, as they had been actively pursuing him throughout the summer.
Chelsea's staggering £115m transfer fee surpasses the previous record-breaking £106.8m they spent on Enzo Fernandez in January. This summer, the team aims to secure the signatures of two midfielders. In addition, Chelsea is on the verge of finalizing a deal with Southampton for the acquisition of Romeo Lavia, who is also a target for Liverpool.
Klopp's dig at Chelsea over transfers: What manager wants they get
Jurgen Klopp had a dig at Chelsea after their 1-1 draw with Liverpool, suggesting whatever the current manager at Stamford Bridge wants, he gets, regarding transfers.
After the teams reached a stalemate on Super Sunday, Klopp was questioned about Mauricio Pochettino's desire for additional players in this transfer window. In response, Klopp remarked, "That's a common expectation for Chelsea managers, and they generally fulfill it."
Furthermore, Klopp stated that there were "no developments to report whatsoever" concerning Caicedo's transfer, following the game.
Redknapp 'shocked' Caicedo turned Liverpool down
Former Liverpool midfielder and We pundit Jamie Redknapp on the Essential Football Podcast:"I'm obviously hugely biased in this one - but this is astonishing for me!
Liverpool would usually emerge as the clear victors in this situation without a doubt. I simply believed it was bound to happen.
I believed that he would appear fantastic in the red kit. I believed that he would be the ideal addition to Liverpool's team.
I understand the appeal of Chelsea as it is a prestigious and successful club that has achieved numerous victories throughout the years. However, what surprises me is the historical perspective of the clubs, particularly with the addition of Caicedo to the already strong partnership of Alexis Mac Allister. In my opinion, this could have been an ideal transfer.
