Having solidified their position as one of the leading first-person shooter developers worldwide, Bungie has made significant contributions to the gaming industry, from their work on numerous Halo titles to the successful launch of Destiny 1 and 2. They have not only pushed the boundaries of the space-fantasy genre but have also achieved great success in building a thriving live-service system for their games. As they approach the conclusion of Destiny 2's narrative with The Final Shape DLC, they have now shared intriguing details about one of their other projects, which will be a part of Bungie's Incubation initiative.
Bungie recently announced on its official Twitter account that it is working on a new game set in a "science-fantasy universe." The game draws inspiration from various genres such as fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and frog-type games. It will take place in a comedic world. A previous job listing hinted at Bungie's focus on competitive PvP, and this new game may be the one referred to in that listing.
Aside from Destiny 2, Marathon is the only other Bungie title that has been officially revealed. Marathon was one of Bungie's early projects, consisting of a trilogy that solidified the developer's presence in the FPS genre. The revival of Marathon will transform the game into a futuristic sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, set on the planet Tau Ceti—an integral location from the original games. The general manager of Marathon also disclosed that it will be significantly different from Bungie's previous and current games and will offer crossplay support for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Bungie is reportedly working on another IP codenamed "Matter," which they trademarked in 2018. Job descriptions have hinted that Matter will be similar to Destiny. Recent court hearings between Microsoft and the FTC have also uncovered documents suggesting that Matter may be released by 2025. Furthermore, a recent job listing at Bungie hints at a possible shift to Unreal Engine 5 for one of their upcoming IPs, departing from their current Tiger engine.
