Bruce Springsteen Joins John Mellencamp to Play Pink Houses

During John Mellencamp's show at Newark's New Jersey Performing Arts Center on March 10, the rock icon surprised the audience by bringing out fellow legend Bruce Springsteen. The 72-year-old Mellencamp started playing "Pink Houses," and the 74-year-old Springsteen joined him on stage, singing the second verse of the 1983 hit. The two iconic rock stars delighted the crowd by singing the memorable line "vacation down in the Gulf of Mexico," creating a special moment for those in attendance.

Springsteen and Mellencamp performed together in 2019 at Sting’s Rainforest Benefit, playing hits from each other's catalog. Mellencamp sang "Pink Houses" and Springsteen sang "Glory Days."

Throughout my career, I always felt like I was seen as a lesser version of Bruce Springsteen," Mellencamp shared with the publication. Despite knowing Bruce for years and exchanging hellos in the past, it wasn't until we performed together at a rainforest event for Sting that our friendship truly blossomed. Bruce became like a big brother to me, treating me with kindness and respect, and I reciprocated those feelings. From that point on, our friendship grew stronger, and we became really close friends almost effortlessly.

"I keep in touch with Bruce regularly now," Mellencamp continued. "We know what each other is up to at any given moment, and it's a great feeling. Our friendship has truly been a positive and rewarding experience."

Mellencamp will continue performing in various cities across the United States before joining Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan for the Outlaw Music Festival. Springsteen will kick off his world tour again on March 19th. Last September, he had to pause the tour to recover from a peptic ulcer.

In a message announcing his decision to take the rest of the year off to focus on healing, Springsteen expressed his gratitude to his friends and fans for their well wishes, encouragement, and support. "I'm feeling better and looking forward to seeing all of you next year," he wrote.
