Officials responded to a wellness check at Britney Spears' residence in southern California on Wednesday. The concern was raised by someone close to Spears, who alerted authorities about her wellbeing. This came after the singer posted a video on social media featuring her dancing with knives. CNN obtained this information from Ventura County Sheriffs Office Captain Dean Worthy.
Worthy stated that while some people believe this is her way of expressing her creative freedom, others raise concerns about the potential danger and implications for her mental health. Authorities chose to investigate the well-being of the singer based on the initial report from a close associate of Spears. CNN has contacted Spears' representative for a statement.
The unidentified Spears associate made an initial call to the Los Angeles Police Department mental health assessment team. The call was later passed to the sheriffs office, according to Worthy. A sergeant, who had a long-standing relationship with Ms. Spears and had previously interacted with her on multiple occasions, was sent by the sheriffs office to the singer's home in Thousand Oaks, California to ensure her safety, Worthy added.
The sergeant arrived at the Spears residence and received a message through the entrance intercom from a member of Spears' security team, notifying him of a potential mental health crisis or risk of self-harm. Worthy stated that the head of Spears' security confirmed that she was with Spears and that there was no threat to her safety, expressing that the singer did not want deputies to enter the property. Additionally, Spears' attorney contacted the sergeant, informing him that he had recently spoken with the singer and assured him that there were no concerns regarding her mental, physical, or overall well-being.
Content Following the confirmation of Spears' safety by two sources, Worthy stated that the sergeant left the premises.
In January, Spears underwent another wellness check after she claimed that "prank phone calls" had led to a visit from the police at her residence.
During that time, the singer took to Twitter and shared a message in which she acknowledged the police visit, stating, "I appreciate the support from my fans, but this incident crossed boundaries and intruded upon my privacy."
Spears clarified that the authorities did not enter her residence and upon their arrival, they promptly realized there was no problem and departed promptly. She expressed her distress over feeling manipulated and harassed, as well as being unfairly depicted in a negative manner by the media once more.
"I sincerely request that during this phase of my life, the public and my beloved fans show their understanding and support by respecting my privacy," she expressed.
In a January email statement to CNN, Sgt. Jason Karol from the Ventura County Sheriffs office verified that they had received "several calls from concerned fans" regarding Spears' decision to deactivate her Instagram account.
