Britney Spears’ conservatorship case with her estranged father Jamie Spears has come to an official end, we are happy to announce.
In a statement to Us on Friday, April 26, Spears’ attorney Mathew Rosengart expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent, protect, and defend Britney Spears. He described her as an iconic and talented artist of historic significance. The conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, and now Britney’s desire for freedom has been fully realized.
The lawyer announced that Britney, 42, will no longer need to deal with court or legal matters due to the settlement.
The statement emphasized that Britney Spears achieved victory when her father was removed by the court and when her basic rights were restored.
After 13 years, Britney's conservatorship was finally terminated in November 2021. Her father, Jamie, had been in control of her estate since 2008, following her public struggles after divorcing Kevin Federline. Jamie, who is now 71, was responsible for managing Britney's finances and personal affairs. (Britney and Federline, who is 46, have two sons together, Sean who is 18, and Jayden who is 17.)
In November 2021, Britney took to Instagram to express her overwhelming love for her fans and celebrate her newfound freedom. She wrote, "Good God I love my fans so much it’s crazy!!! ️ I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day !!!! Best day ever … praise the Lord … can I get an Amen???? #FreedBritney"

In her memoir "The Woman in Me" released in 2023, Britney shared her feelings of entrapment due to her father's control over her for a period of ten years.
She expressed, "I felt like a robot, but not just any robot - more like a child-like robot. I had been treated in such a way that I was losing parts of myself that made me feel like who I truly am." Britney continued, "The conservatorship took away my sense of womanhood, reducing me to a child. On stage, I felt like more of a puppet than a person. Music had always been a part of my identity, in my very bones and blood; they took that away from me."
Britney expressed feeling betrayed by her family for not supporting her during a tough time in her life.
Reflecting on the past, she wrote about how her father and his team had control over her body and finances for an extended period, which now makes her feel disgusted. She highlighted the double standards in the industry, mentioning how male artists faced similar struggles with money management, substance abuse, and mental health issues, yet no one intervened to protect their autonomy. Britney emphasized that she did not deserve the treatment she received from her family.
Jamie, however, had a different perspective on the conservatorship. In December 2022, he explained and defended his choice to keep his daughter under his protection for an extended period.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, he acknowledged that not everyone would agree with his decision. Despite the challenges, Jamie expressed his deep love and concern for his daughter. He believed that without the conservatorship, Britney's life could have been in danger. Jamie emphasized that the conservatorship was not only for Britney's well-being but also for the protection of her two teenage sons. He viewed it as a necessary and effective tool in ensuring their safety and security.
Editor's P/S:
Britney Spears' conservatorship case has finally come to an end, and it's a victory for her and her fans. After 13 long years, she is finally free from the control of her father, Jamie Spears. This is a testament to her strength and resilience, and it's a reminder that no one should ever have to endure such a situation.
It's also important to remember that Britney's case is not an isolated incident. Many other people have been subjected to conservatorships, and it's a system that is often abused. We need to work to ensure that everyone has the right to make their own decisions, and that no one is ever again subjected to the kind of abuse that Britney Spears endured.
