The status of the Star Wars' Lando show is unclear, but its production is contingent on the underwhelming box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, which makes its occurrence increasingly improbable. The show Lando was announced in 2020 during Disney's Investor Day and was supposed to revolve around the titular character. This announcement came shortly after the return of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, the focus of the show was intended to be on the younger version of the character, portrayed by Donald Glover, as seen in Solo.
Given the lack of official confirmation on the progress of the Lando Calrissian story, it appears that the show may follow a similar fate as other announced projects like Rogue Squadron and Rangers of the New Republic, which have failed to materialize. The uncertainty surrounding the potential involvement of Glover and Williams, as well as the scope of the show's storyline, further adds to its questionable prospects. Nonetheless, for the show to proceed, the return of a particular character is necessary. Unfortunately, this seems increasingly doubtful due to the disappointing box office reception of Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Lando Should Only Happen With Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo Return
Han Solo, portrayed by Alden Ehrenreich, is the character that should make a comeback. In Solo, Ehrenreich brilliantly portrayed a younger version of Han, alongside Donald Glover's captivating portrayal of Lando. Although Lando is an engaging character who can stand on his own, it cannot be denied that their dynamic together created some of Solo's most memorable moments. This was also the case with the older versions of these characters in The Empire Strikes Back. As Glover is set to reprise his role as the younger Lando, it would be essential for Ehrenreich to return as Han.
However, the likelihood of Ehrenreich returning to the Star Wars franchise is diminishing. Despite expressing his willingness to reprise the character in an interview with IndieWire, the disappointing box office performance of Solo makes it unlikely that Disney would bring back Ehrenreich's version of Han. Regrettably, Disney misinterpreted the reasons behind Solo's underwhelming box office outcome. They wrongly believed that audiences did not see the movie due to Ehrenreich's portrayal of the younger Han, when in reality, his performance was just as exceptional as Glover's portrayal of Lando.
Will The Lando TV Show Actually Happen? Why Is It Taking So Long?
The status of the Lando show and whether it will ever happen remains uncertain and frustrating. Recent reports suggest that the show on Disney+ is still on pause, casting doubt on its future. It is likely that the show has been halted due to changes in Lucasfilm's overall plan for the Star Wars franchise. The focus of the franchise on Disney+ appears to be on New Republic era stories, such as Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Mandalorian season 4, as indicated at Star Wars Celebration 2023.
Since Lando was expected to be set in the Empire era and feature Glover's return, it is evident that the show no longer aligns with Lucasfilm's Disney+ plans. Furthermore, three new Star Wars movies were announced at SWCE 2023, none of which include Lando as a character. Therefore, it is clear that Lando is no longer part of the future plan for Star Wars, which is disappointing considering the potential for an exciting adventure with Donald Glover and Alden Ehrenreich in a distant galaxy.
