Tory Lanez was convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in both feet and has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday, August 8. This sentencing follows Lanez's guilty verdict on three felony assault charges in December 2022. Megan, 28, had publicly accused Lanez, 31, of the shooting via Instagram Live in August 2020. The incident occurred one month prior after they left a party at Kylie Jenner's residence, leading to Megan undergoing surgery to remove shrapnel from her left foot.
Lanez was taken into custody in October 2020 and accused of multiple serious offenses, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm, illegal possession of a concealed firearm, and recklessly firing a firearm. He entered a plea of not guilty for all these charges.
Before his trial began in December 2022, Lanez addressed the incident where the shooting occurred on his album "Daystar" released in September 2020. In one of the tracks titled "Money Over Fallouts," he vehemently denied his involvement in the crime, expressing disbelief at the idea of injuring someone's foot without hitting any bones or tendons. He also questioned his team's portrayal of him as a dangerous individual.
Drake faced criticism for appearing to mention the case in his November 2022 track "Circo Loco." In the song's opening verse, the 36-year-old rapper stated: "This woman falsely claims she received shots, yet she remains strong / She doesn't even understand the reference, yet she continues to smile."
Shortly after the song's release, Megan expressed her disapproval of the lyrics via social media. "I understand that I'm highly recognized, but please refrain from adding baseless conspiracy theories to my reputation in your lyrics," she tweeted at that moment.
In November 2022, Lil Yachty, who co-wrote the song, clarified that the lyric was not aimed at Megan, but rather at women who falsely claim their butt shots are real. He made this statement during an Instagram Live session and also mentioned that he was aware that Drake would not personally address the controversy. In April, Megan expressed the emotional impact of having her shooting account questioned in an essay she wrote for Elle.
"I not only survived a betrayal from someone I trusted and considered a close friend, but I also had to face the public humiliation of having my name and reputation tarnished by that individual, for the entire world to witness," she expressed. "Even some of my colleagues in the music industry joined in, using memes, jokes, and indirect criticisms, all the while disregarding the fact that my life could have been taken. Instead of denouncing any form of violence towards women, these individuals attempted to rationalize my attacker's actions."
Megan emphasized that Lanez's conviction meant more than just personal "vindication" for her. "It symbolized a triumph for every woman who has ever been shamed, dismissed, and held accountable for a violent crime committed against them," she penned.
