A leaker has seemingly confirmed that a new Pokemon spin-off will be announced during the June 21 Nintendo Direct. This particular spin-off has been in development since 2019, but has been kept under wraps until now.
The Pokemon franchise is known for its numerous spin-off games, starting as early as 1998 with the Game Boy Color adaptation of the trading card game. With very few exceptions, fans can expect a new Pokemon game every year, thanks to the franchise's dedication to creating spin-offs. However, one of the most unique and unusual spin-offs to date is Detective Pikachu, released in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS. This game introduced a more Western aesthetic, voice acting for the Pokemon characters (which is rare), and a strong focus on solving mysteries. Detective Pikachu quickly gained a devoted following, leading to a film adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds, as well as the announcement of a Nintendo Switch sequel in 2019. However, no further details about the sequel have been revealed in the past four years.
The recent tweet from well-known leaker Pyoro, featuring a GIF of Detective Pikachu dancing in the movie, has sparked speculation about a potential announcement. The caption, "Good morning," has led many to believe that this could be a hint towards the highly anticipated Detective Pikachu 2. The response in the comments has been a mix of excitement and skepticism. If this leak turns out to be true, it would mark the third leaked announcement for the June 2023 Direct, following the reveal of a new 2D Mario game and a remake of an SNES bestseller.
The original Detective Pikachu game was incredibly popular, especially considering its initial release in Japan only. The hype surrounding the game continued to grow after the sequel was announced, despite the lack of updates during its production. With news of a Detective Pikachu movie sequel being in development earlier this year, it is apparent that The Pokemon Company has plans to further expand this sub-franchise. This could potentially indicate that a game sequel is on the horizon as well.
Nintendo fans eagerly await the Nintendo Direct airing tomorrow at 7:00am PST/ 10:00am EST to confirm whether Pyoro's predictions are accurate.
