Angel Reese is addressing criticism about attending the Met Gala the night before a Chicago Sky game.
During a press conference, Reese, 22, shared that many people advised her against going to the Met Gala as it might affect her focus during the game against the New York Liberty. Despite the feedback, Reese confidently stated that she not only attended and enjoyed the Met Gala in New York but also performed exceptionally well in the game against New York. She emphasized that she is capable of balancing both aspects successfully.
The Chicago Sky’s victory against the 2023 WNBA runner-ups came one night after Reese attended fashion’s biggest night at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 6.
Drawing inspiration from the Costume Institute’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit and the night’s “Garden of Time” dress code, Reese glittered on the Met red carpet in a mint green 16Arlington by Marco Capaldo gown.
Her dress’ V-neck bodice and sheer skirt featured intricate floral designs, while the waistline was covered in fluffy feathers. In addition to rocking a matching pair of mint green Stuart Weitzman heels, Reese completed her look with several pieces of silver jewelry, natural glam makeup and a slicked-back ponytail.
She captioned Instagram pics of her look on Wednesday, May 8, saying, "22nd birthday at the MET GALA?! I think YES. Thank you to Anna Wintour & @instagram for inviting me to this amazing event!"
Reese believes her ability to transition from attending the Met Gala to excelling on the basketball court should not be criticized. She expressed, "I give a lot of confidence to so many different people. Women don’t have to be one-dimensional. They don’t have to do one thing." Reese also commended the league's multifaceted players for "what’s growing the game" during a press conference this week.

Reese declared for the WNBA draft last month after a successful college basketball career at Louisiana State University. In an interview with Vogue in April, she expressed her satisfaction with her achievements in college, including winning a national championship, being named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year, and earning All-American status. She stated that her ultimate goal is to become a professional basketball player and be remembered as one of the greatest to ever play the game. Reese confidently stated, "I feel like I'm prepared for this next step."
She also shared, "People appreciate me beyond the basketball court. They appreciate me for being true to myself and speaking out on important issues that others may shy away from. So, I plan to continue being authentic, even on tough days or when facing criticism. I will always stay true to who I am."
She was drafted by the Chicago Sky in the WNBA Draft on April 16, as the 7th overall pick. Her first game with the team was on Tuesday against the New York Liberty, as they prepare for the start of the 2024 WNBA regular season on May 14.
