Alexa PenaVega, who is pregnant with her fourth child with husband Carlos PenaVega, opened up about the challenges they have faced in their marriage. "I’ve always told people, I’m like, ‘The truth is marriage is this beautiful, holy thing. It’s a sacred thing. And you go through bumps,’” Alexa, 35, exclusively told We on Tuesday, November 28, while promoting the pair’s partnership with The Salvation Army. “There was a time in our marriage where if we were not married, we would have broken up.”

The star of Spy Kids, who recently revealed she is expecting her fourth child, shared that marriage is about working through challenges and growing stronger as a couple. Alexa and Carlos, both 34, got married in 2014 and continue to learn from each other. Despite their different problem-solving techniques, they have found that prayer has been a significant factor in their relationship.

"Life can be challenging. It's incredibly difficult," she shared with Us. "But taking the time to sit down and truly communicate. I know it sounds cliché, but it's true. It's when our communication falters that we begin to encounter obstacles."

Alexa, who has six-year-old son Ocean, four-year-old son Kingston, and two-year-old daughter Rio with her husband, a member of Big Time Rush, admitted that communication is not her strong suit.

"I have to admit, I have a really hard time with communication. He's so good at it," she said, surprising her husband with her confession. "Are we recording this? Is this being recorded right now? Can I get a copy of this?" he joked in response.

Alexa shared that Carlos is "very good at clearly expressing his wants and expectations," while she struggles with people pleasing. Together, they are committed to giving back and have teamed up with The Salvation Army to support victims of the August wildfires in Maui. The couple, who live in Lahaina, Hawaii, are dedicated to helping the community recover from the devastating impact of the fires.

"We always tell people that there are numerous ways to give, not just financially," Carlos shared with Us on Tuesday. He recounted taking his family to Maui to personally assist after the disaster, shopping for and meeting the children they were helping. "It was a profound moment for us and especially for our kids. It made us realize the true meaning of giving."

Alexa described The Salvation Army as "part of our family," recalling seeing the iconic red kettles outside grocery stores while growing up. "The act of giving is not about receiving, but rather about expanding your heart," she explained. "The joy on people's faces when you give is truly incomparable."

Carlos mentioned that The Salvation Army runs the Angel Tree program at Walmart stores across the country during the holiday season. When shopping, shoppers will find trees with tags bearing a child's name and something they wish for Christmas.

"You can choose a tag and purchase gifts for the child. These gifts will directly benefit children and youth," he informed us. "We've had wonderful experiences taking our own children to participate in this program over the years."
