Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 7.
Summary
The placement of the Ahsoka episode 7 in the Star Wars timeline creates inconsistencies, raising doubts about its alignment with the broader galactic timeline. The training holovids featuring Anakin Skywalker in episode 7 do not align with the established timeline, conflicting with his capacity to offer comprehensive lightsaber lessons to Ahsoka in the earlier stages.
The events of Ahsoka, occurring after The Mandalorian season 3, raise concerns about the timeline's coherence and why Ahsoka delayed her quest. Star Wars should exercise more caution in managing its timeline. Despite certain references in Ahsoka episode 7 that establish its place in the Star Wars timeline, inconsistencies have emerged with far-reaching consequences. While Ahsoka is known to be set during The Mandalorian era, which begins five years after Return of the Jedi, the exact timeframe was previously undisclosed. However, the recent inclusion of specific events in episode 7 has sparked further inquiries.
Ahsoka episode 7 has not only confused its own timeline but also the timeline of the past. Hayden Christensen's return as Anakin Skywalker has been legendary, but the references to Anakin and Ahsoka's Clone Wars past have raised inconsistencies and questions. While it is welcoming to have the series connect to previous Star Wars eras and establish its place within the timeline, it is concerning how this is impacting the greater galactic timeline.
Anakin Skywalker's Training Holovids Don't Fit With The Star Wars Timeline
In Ahsoka episode 7, Christensen makes another appearance as Anakin, and notable figures like Count Dooku, Asajj Ventress, and General Grievous are mentioned. Although this moment is amazing, the context of when these holovids were filmed doesn't align with the timeline. Ahsoka mentions that the video she's watching in episode 7 is the last one Anakin recorded for her, and the regret in her voice suggests that it was recorded shortly before she left the Jedi Order. However, some details indicate that it was actually recorded at the beginning of the Clone Wars.
Anakin is seen wearing his armor from Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 1, and he mentions the Separatist adversaries as if Ahsoka hasn't encountered them yet. This contradicts the fact that Ahsoka started using the dual lightsaber technique in The Clone Wars season 3. It raises questions about how Anakin could have provided her with adequate lightsaber training so early in her journey.
Ahsoka Takes Place After The Mandalorian Season 3... Which Makes No Sense
In Ahsoka episode 7, Captain Carson Teva mentions the connection between Mandalore and Grand Admiral Thrawn, firmly establishing the timeline of events after The Mandalorian season 3. However, this connection doesn't fit together as seamlessly as expected. Ahsoka's journey actually begins in Ahsoka with the capture of Morgan Elsbeth, which occurred with the assistance of Din Djarin in The Mandalorian season 2. At the start of Ahsoka, Morgan remains in captivity.
The issue arises with Jon Favreau's statement that the time period between The Mandalorian season 2, The Book of Boba Fett, and The Mandalorian season 3 aligns with their real-world release dates. According to this timeline, season 3 takes place a little over 2 years after the season 2 finale, with The Book of Boba Fett occurring in between. In light of this, Ahsoka would have captured Morgan, spent a year engaged in various activities, including a visit to Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple on Ossus, and then waited another year to interrogate Morgan and begin her Ahsoka quest. The question arises: Why would she wait for such a long time?
Star Wars Needs To Be Much More Careful With Its Timeline
The time period between the original Star Wars trilogy and the sequel trilogy offers ample storytelling opportunities, but it also poses a risk of inconsistencies. It is challenging to have so much open space for new stories, particularly when trying to align them with the dense and loyal timeline of Star Wars, like the Galactic Civil War Era. Though creators like Favreau and Dave Filoni are crafting amazing narratives, ensuring everything fits together seamlessly presents a significant challenge, which Ahsoka exemplifies.
Nonetheless, Ahsoka still has the potential to clarify its timeline choices. Perhaps intergalactic travel takes longer than anticipated, resulting in the events of The Mandalorian season 3 concluding before Ahsoka even arrives in Peridea. It is also possible that Ahsoka required additional time to gather information on Thrawn and Morgan before proceeding with her interrogation of the Nightsister and embarking on her mission. However, if this is the case, it requires a more structured and supported explanation. Additionally, fans would appreciate more details about why and how Ahsoka spent time with Luke on Ossus. As Star Wars continues to expand its universe with these captivating worlds and narratives, it must remain diligent in maintaining a coherent timeline, especially as it expands into the new Mandalorian-era.
Ahsoka releases new episodes Tuesdays at 6 pm PT / 9 pm ET on Disney+.
