Although he started as one of the main antagonists in the Star Wars show, he later stepped back to make way for Lars Mikkelsen's Thrawn.
Despite this, Baylan still managed to create one of the most unforgettable moments in the epilogue of the Ahsoka finale. In this scene, the former Jedi turned mercenary is shown sitting on top of a statue of the Mortis gods, significant figures in the Star Wars universe's larger mythology that were previously featured in the Clone Wars animated series. It appeared that this scene was intended to pave the way for Baylan's storyline in future Star Wars endeavors. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Filoni acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Baylan’s post-Ahsoka trajectory. At the same time, the showrunner also admitted that Lucasfilm has yet to make a decision about how (or even if) to move forward with the character in Stevensen’s absence.
Filoni stated, "Clearly, there's a narrative to be told." "We're currently in a waiting phase. However, I'm pleased that the focus is on Ray and his tremendous performance." He also expressed regret that Stevenson wasn't present to witness the enthusiastic reception of his portrayal of Baylan in Ahsoka.
“He would’ve been thrilled. It’s a shame he didn’t get to experience it,” he said. “I’m happy he was able to join us at Star Wars Celebration and see the trailer and feel the enthusiasm from the fans. They have been incredibly supportive of Ray and his character.”
In addition to discussing Stevenson's sad departure from the Star Wars series, Filoni also mentioned the potential direction for Baylan within the fictional universe. According to Filoni, the scene with Baylan and the Mortis gods statue “gives you a hint of what Baylan is seeking” if he were to make a comeback.

Filoni emphasized to Vanity Fair that he is not in the business of issuing orders to other Star Wars creators. "I'm not dictating people's actions," he explained. "But I do see myself as someone who is striving to assist them in telling the most compelling story they can. I aim to be a guiding presence, much like a member of the Jedi Council."
