Ahsoka: Exploring the Fate of Ray Stevenson's Baylan Skoll - Insights from Dave Filoni

Dave Filoni discusses the fate of Baylan Skoll, played by Ray Stevenson, in Ahsoka's finale Find out what lies ahead for the character in this exclusive insight from Lucasfilm's Chief Creative Officer

Dave Filoni, the showrunner for Ahsoka, suggested what might happen next for Baylan Skoll, the character played by the late Ray Stevenson, after the finale of the Disney+ show. Stevenson played the role of Baylan, a former Jedi, in all eight episodes of Ahsoka. Although he started as one of the main antagonists in the Star Wars show, he later stepped back to make way for Lars Mikkelsen's Thrawn.

Despite this, Baylan still managed to create one of the most unforgettable moments in the epilogue of the Ahsoka finale. In this scene, the former Jedi turned mercenary is shown sitting on top of a statue of the Mortis gods, significant figures in the Star Wars universe's larger mythology that were previously featured in the Clone Wars animated series. It appeared that this scene was intended to pave the way for Baylan's storyline in future Star Wars endeavors. However, Stevenson's unexpected passing in May 2023 has left the fate of this beloved villain uncertain.

Dave Filoni addresses future of Ray Stevenson’s Baylan Skoll

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Filoni acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Baylan’s post-Ahsoka trajectory. At the same time, the showrunner also admitted that Lucasfilm has yet to make a decision about how (or even if) to move forward with the character in Stevensen’s absence.

Filoni stated, "Clearly, there's a narrative to be told." "We're currently in a waiting phase. However, I'm pleased that the focus is on Ray and his tremendous performance." He also expressed regret that Stevenson wasn't present to witness the enthusiastic reception of his portrayal of Baylan in Ahsoka.

“He would’ve been thrilled. It’s a shame he didn’t get to experience it,” he said. “I’m happy he was able to join us at Star Wars Celebration and see the trailer and feel the enthusiasm from the fans. They have been incredibly supportive of Ray and his character.”

In addition to discussing Stevenson's sad departure from the Star Wars series, Filoni also mentioned the potential direction for Baylan within the fictional universe. According to Filoni, the scene with Baylan and the Mortis gods statue “gives you a hint of what Baylan is seeking” if he were to make a comeback.

Ahsoka’s Dave Filoni named Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer

Filoni, newly announced as Lucasfilm’s Chief Creative Officer, will be in charge of resolving Baylan's destiny, among other unresolved Star Wars narrative threads. In his role, the Ahsoka showrunner will oversee all upcoming franchise additions "at the inception phase."

Filoni emphasized to Vanity Fair that he is not in the business of issuing orders to other Star Wars creators. "I'm not dictating people's actions," he explained. "But I do see myself as someone who is striving to assist them in telling the most compelling story they can. I aim to be a guiding presence, much like a member of the Jedi Council."
