The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom smashes sales records, achieving a remarkable milestone in under two months since its highly awaited release

Highlights

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has sold over 18.51 million units in less than two months.

The latest financial report from Nintendo reveals that Tears of the Kingdom accounted for 50% of its revenue from first-party games and has secured its position as the ninth bestselling game for the Nintendo Switch. This remarkable achievement makes Tears of the Kingdom the second most successful release for Nintendo, surpassed only by Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and has significantly boosted the sales of the Nintendo Switch.

Just under two months since its release, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has officially exceeded 18.51 million units sold as of June 30th this year. This accounts for over half of the 30.65 million units sold by Breath of the Wild over a span of six years. If this trend continues, there is a possibility that the sequel could surpass its predecessor in sales.

The release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in 2023 was greatly anticipated, alongside The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as a major offering from Nintendo. Building upon the success of Breath of the Wild, it introduces two additional maps alongside the original overworld, innovative new mechanics, and a darker storyline featuring the return of the beloved villain Ganondorf with a killer redesign. Various other enhancements and adjustments have also been made.

According to Nintendo's most recent financial report, covering April, May, and June of this fiscal year, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom accounted for 50% of Nintendo's first-party game revenue. Along with the massively successful Mario movie that grossed over a billion dollars, Tears of the Kingdom stood as one of Nintendo's top revenue generators. Nintendo also highlighted the fact that a significant portion of their sales were from newcomers to the franchise, excluding digital sales. Notably, Tears of the Kingdom swiftly rose to become the ninth best-selling game for the Nintendo Switch and one of the most lucrative games of the year.

Tears of the Kingdom has become a testament to Nintendo's success, currently ranking as their second biggest launch after last year's Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. In 2023, the Nintendo Switch achieved an impressive milestone of 129.53 million units sold, putting it just shy of surpassing Nintendo's DS as the third highest-selling gaming hardware of all time.

Despite concerns about an aging console and rumors of a new one on the horizon, Nintendo shows no signs of slowing down. Since its launch in 2017, the company has been unstoppable, and their plans to replicate the success of that year in 2023 only add to the excitement. Undoubtedly, Link's latest adventure is partly responsible for this ongoing accomplishment.
