Cole Hauser and Taylor Sheridan's tension has been ongoing, possibly longer than some Yellowstone fans were aware of. Following Sheridan's lawsuit against Hauser, a recently uncovered interview highlighted past issues between the two. In a section of Hauser's April 2022 Men’s Journal profile, it was revealed that the duo, ages 53 and 48 respectively, "got into a fight" during their second meeting.
"They are so familiar with each other at this stage that Sheridan, the writer or co-writer of every episode of the show, incorporates elements of Hauser's past to evoke emotional reactions from him on screen," the publication stated.
In an earlier part of the feature story, Hauser playfully mentioned his tendency to get into bar fights.
"Have you ever seen a bear in the woods? I’ve probably encountered one on every continent," he joked. "I don’t see anything wrong with a good fight. Sometimes I’m just tired of talking, so let’s settle things with a brawl. Maybe afterwards you can buy me a Guinness and I’ll get you a Bushmills, and we can call it even. It’s just what guys do."
Hauser has portrayed the character of Rip Wheeler on the Paramount Network western since its premiere in 2018. Following the success of Yellowstone, Sheridan's television world expanded with several spinoffs, including 1883 and 1923.
Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Sheridan's Bosque Ranch has filed a lawsuit against Hauser's coffee company, Free Rein, on November 21 for trademark infringement, unfair competition, and false advertising. The lawsuit alleges that Hauser's coffee brand has a logo that appears similar to Sheridan's "B and R" design for his ranch. Sheridan claims that Free Rein is "confusingly similar" to his brand and "constitutes false and misleading descriptions of fact that are likely to cause confusion or to cause mistake" as to which goods are associated with Bosque Ranch, which was founded nearly 20 years ago.
Sheridan noted that Bosque Ranch had publicly announced a new craft coffee centered around the “cowboy way of life” in June. The screenwriter questioned the timing of Hauser’s brand, which was launched “a little over three months” later without permission or authorization from Sheridan.
The legal filing requested that Hauser’s company cease using the Free Rein brand and “destroy all products, marketing and promotional materials” related to their brand. Bosque Ranch also stated that they expect Free Rein to pay “compensatory damages” due to it “irreparably damaging” Sheridan’s business.
