Unraveling the Intricate John Dutton Family Tree: A Tale of Yellowstone's 1883 Star

Isabel May, star of the television show 1883, describes the Dutton family tree in Yellowstone as "confusing." The show is a prequel to Yellowstone and features country singer Tim McGraw as James Dutton, who leads his family and other immigrants on a dangerous journey to Oregon. May plays Elsa Dutton, the 17-year-old daughter of James and Margaret Dutton (played by Faith Hill), who narrates the family's adventure.

To mark the re-release of 1883 on Paramount Network, The Hollywood Reporter interviewed May about the show and the broader Yellowstone franchise. With the addition of the prequel spinoff 1923, which expands the Dutton family tree even further, May admitted that she finds it challenging to keep track of the different generations across the multiple shows. How The Dutton Family Tree Continues to Expand

Sheridan has expanded the Yellowstone franchise by introducing the Dutton family in the popular Paramount Network modern Western series. With each spinoff, the family tree of the Duttons has grown, now reaching the sixth generation with John Dutton III's (Kevin Costner) children in Yellowstone. Jamie Dutton II, the son of Jamie (Wes Bentley), and Tate (Brecken Merrill), the son of Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille), represent the seventh generation.

In 1923, James' brother Jacob Dutton took over the management of the ranch after James and Margaret passed away. He faced the challenge of protecting the land from immigrant sheep herders and powerful businessmen. However, the Duttons underestimated the strength of their union, resulting in the death of John Dutton I. John is survived by his son Jack, who has yet to be confirmed as the father of John Dutton II. Additionally, Spencer Dutton's marriage to Alexandra could potentially expand the family tree, as their lineage remains unknown.

The Dutton family and the Yellowstone universe are set to expand further with a sequel series led by Matthew McConaughey, following Kevin Costner's departure. While details about the plot and McConaughey's character are currently unknown, there are plans for a third Yellowstone prequel titled 1944, in addition to the previously announced 1883 and 1923. This suggests that the Dutton family may continue to witness the growth of their family tree.
