During the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft treated gamers to new footage of Starfield and the announcement of a new Fable game. While these AAA titles were the main attraction for many viewers, Xbox Games Studios CEO Phil Spencer managed to catch the attention of some gamers with his choice of attire - a Hexen shirt. This has led to speculation about the potential return of the long-dormant FPS franchise.
Hexen: Beyond Heretic, created by Raven Software and published by id Software and GT Interactive in 1995, is a fantasy shooter that introduced many innovative features to the FPS genre. It allowed players to choose between three different classes, each with their own unique weapons and skills, and incorporated the "hub" style of interconnected level design that would later be used in Quake. Hexen was followed by a sequel, Hexen 2, in 1998, and is part of Raven's loosely-connected "Serpent Riders" trilogy.
Phil Spencer caused quite a stir when he appeared on stage at the Xbox Games Showcase sporting a Hexen shirt, catching the attention of nostalgic gamers. Game Pass Counter’s Twitter account also noted Spencer’s unusual choice of attire, with some speculating that this could be a hint at the return of the long-dormant franchise. While some were disappointed that this was not a teaser for a big reveal or remake, it is possible that Spencer was simply paying homage to a beloved game. However, given the popularity of “boomer shooters” that mix retro aesthetics with modern design, a Hexen reboot with old-school graphics and some modern touches could be a hit with gamers. Additionally, the nostalgia factor could give it an edge over other retro shooters like Warhammer 40K Boltgun.
Many gamers have not forgotten the Hexen franchise despite its absence for decades. Phil Spencer's Hexen shirt may have been a spur-of-the-moment fashion choice or a subtle hint at things to come, but either way, the timing couldn't be better for a revival of the game. With the genre once again in the spotlight thanks to the upcoming fantasy shooter Immortals of Aveum, there's a perfect opportunity for Hexen: Beyond Heretic to shine once more. It's currently available on PC.
