Blizzard's recent announcement regarding price adjustments for World of Warcraft in specific regions has caused concern among gamers worldwide. Despite a general increase in video game and subscription prices over the years, the game's monthly subscription costs have remained relatively stable in most parts of the globe since its launch in 2004. In the United States, for example, the recurring monthly subscription remains at $14.99 USD, with slight discounts for multi-month subscriptions. However, the costs of maintaining a long-running MMORPG like World of Warcraft inevitably change over time, resulting in unfortunate price increases for gamers in two particular countries.
Gamers in Ukraine and Turkey will soon have to pay more for their World of Warcraft subscriptions, according to a recent post on the Blizzard forum. The increase, which will take effect on July 5, 2023, will see the monthly subscription cost rise from 149 TRY and 299 UAH to 199 TRY and 389 UAH respectively, as well as other price hikes on services like the Dragonflight expansion and microtransactions. While the exchange rates currently make the cost seem relatively low, one Wowhead user noted that purchasing power parity (PPP) puts the true cost at a much higher $41 to $46 USD. This news has been met with criticism from players on social media, who accuse Activision Blizzard of exploiting the current situations in Ukraine and Turkey to increase profits. The move has also negatively impacted the company's CEO, Bobby Kotick, in the eyes of the gaming community.
Some users attributed the price hikes to the inevitable impact of inflation on the gaming industry worldwide, but acknowledged that the timing of the increases was less than ideal. With the purchasing power of the lira and hryvnia still fluctuating, it remains to be seen what the lasting implications will be for World of Warcraft enthusiasts in Turkey and Ukraine. The game is currently accessible on PC.
