On the surface, Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 may seem like vastly different games, with one being a dark and loot-driven RPG and the other a hero shooter that prioritizes PvP gameplay. However, both titles share the common thread of being developed by Blizzard, and with Overwatch already featuring cosmetic items inspired by the Diablo franchise, it wouldn't be surprising to see Diablo return the favor in some capacity.
While some fans may initially be put off by the idea of Overwatch 2's more lighthearted characters and universe crossing over into the grim and violent world of Sanctuary, a recent collaboration between Diablo 4 and KFC showed that there is room for some fun and unexpected crossovers. With nods to KFC's "original recipe" appearing in the form of items like "The Vessel of Eleven," it's clear that Blizzard isn't afraid to have a little fun with its franchises.
Given this willingness to experiment, it's entirely possible that Diablo 4 could feature some well-placed nods to Overwatch 2 in the form of cosmetic items or even playable characters. Ultimately, only time will tell what kind of crossover content will make its way into Diablo 4, but fans of both franchises can rest assured that Blizzard is always looking for new and exciting ways to bring its games together.
Perhaps one of the most exciting cosmetic options in Diablo 4 would be the ability to customize the appearance of the Druid's various forms, particularly the Werebear. Fans of the game will know that the Druid class can transform into a ferocious Werebear, unleashing powerful attacks on enemies. A unique cosmetic option could allow players to replace the standard Werebear look with a Winston skin, complete with the genetically-engineered gorilla's Primal Rage abilities.
In addition to class-specific skins, there is also the potential for more traditional cosmetic options. For example, players could dress their characters in outfits based on heroes from Overwatch 2. The Necromancer would be a natural choice for a Moira skin, given the class's dark aesthetic and Moira's obsession with twisted science. Similarly, the Rogue's hood would make a perfect fit for a Reaper skin, while the Barbarian would be well-suited to a Brigitte skin, thanks to her imposing size. Finally, the Sorceror could be given a Ramattra's staff skin as a unique substitute.
When it comes to weapons, there are plenty of options from Overwatch 2 that could be incorporated into Diablo 4. For example, the Sorceror’s staff could be swapped out for Mercy’s Caduceus Staff, which players could purchase from the in-game shop. The Rogue could wield Hanzo’s bow and Kiriko’s kunai, while Genji’s Dragonblade could be another viable option. Of course, certain Overwatch 2 guns would not fit within the world of Diablo and should be left out, but melee weapons could easily be added.
In terms of cosmetics, players could have access to emotes, dialogue, and customization items. Perhaps players could earn a title for their Diablo 4 character that references the Winston meme from Overwatch 2, or equip the Overwatch logo on their player card. Fan favorite emotes such as Sombra’s Marionette could be referenced, and any class that receives a skin based on an Overwatch 2 hero could utter their iconic lines of dialogue. Hearing a Sorcerer dressed like Mercy reference the “whambulance” could be hilarious, while a Winston-inspired Druid talking about Peanut Butter would be equally amusing.
While it may be concerning to some that Overwatch 2 heroes and items could be seen in a PvE game, this presents an exciting opportunity for Blizzard, especially with the Battle Pass system on the horizon. Creating an Overwatch-themed Battle Pass for Diablo 4 would make perfect sense, and with Blizzard’s history of including fun easter eggs such as Diablo’s cow level and unexpected crossovers like KFC, this team-up wouldn't be as far-fetched as it may seem.
Diablo 4 launches on June 6 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
