In the 4.1 update of Genshin Impact, a pair of new characters wielding catalysts make their appearance, including the Cryo catalyst user named Wriothesley. What sets Wriothesley apart from other catalyst users is his preference for engaging in melee-range combat, employing boxing animations similar to Heizou. Consequently, Wriothesley's team composition requirements deviate from the norms of typical catalyst characters. To fully exploit his playstyle, Wriothesley thrives with close-range support characters, specifically those capable of crowd control and enhancing his focus on melee combat.

With this being the case, Wriothesley's ideal team members bear some resemblance to those of Ayaka. However, Wriothesley differs from Ayaka in his ability to effectively utilize Melt compositions, while Ayaka struggles with this elemental reaction due to her swift application. Wriothesley's strengths lie in his mastery of Melt, Freeze, and Mono-Cryo team compositions, offering various support options in Genshin Impact such as crowd control, elemental application, shield or healing, and more. In general, Cryo support units like Shenhe, Anemo support units like Kazuha, Hydro units like Xingqiu, and Pyro support units like Bennett or Xiangling prove to be the most beneficial to Wriothesley. However, if players do not have access to all of these characters, there are alternative options that can still complement Wriothesley. Furthermore, with the upcoming patch introducing Furina and Charlotte, the possibilities for alternative team compositions for Wriothesley expand even further. Enclosed below are some of Wriothesley's optimum team compositions, designed to minimize reliance on the same characters repeatedly.

Wriothesley + Shenhe + Xiangling + Bennett

Wonderous Wriothesley Squad: Ultimate Team Composition Guide for Genshin Impact

Wriothesley: Main DPS

Shenhe: Buffer

Xiangling: Sub-DPS, Pyro enabler

Bennett: A Versatile Support

Wriothesley shines in Melt team compositions, making him incredibly potent against boss enemies thanks to his focused combat style. Moreover, his ideal setup with Maracchuse Hunter eliminates the need for Blizzard Strayer or freezing to gain a Crit Rate boost. With this composition, players can take advantage of both Cryo and Pyro resonance, maximizing Wriothesley's performance as his ATK also scales up.

Shenhe stands out among the current Cryo units as the perfect Cryo support for Wriothesley, as she has the ability to enhance Cryo damage. Meanwhile, Xiangling and Bennett are widely recognized as top-tier Pyro units in general, but they are particularly well-suited options for Wriothesley. Together, they form an excellent synergy with one another and with Wriothesley, greatly amplifying his damage output, especially if Xiangling has unlocked later constellations.

To ensure optimal performance from this team, it is recommended for players to start the rotation by activating Bennett's Burst, followed by Xiangling's Burst, before switching to Shenhe and ultimately Wriothesley. This sequence will maximize the benefits that Wriothesley brings. While Bennett can serve as an energy provider in this setup, it is crucial to focus on building up Xiangling's energy recharge in order to activate her Elemental Burst during every rotation.

Wriothesley + Sucrose + Nahida + Thoma

Wonderous Wriothesley Squad: Ultimate Team Composition Guide for Genshin Impact

Wriothesley: Main DPS

Sucrose: Buffer, Debuffer, Crowd Control, Elemental Driver

Nahida: Dendro enabler, Sub DPS, Buffer

Thoma: Shielder, Pyro enabler

Cryo doesn't have its own elemental reaction with Dendro, but it can benefit from the Burning reaction between Dendro and Pyro to create Melt reactions. This approach, although more restrictive than a standard Melt composition, offers an enjoyable opportunity to experiment with different team setups and unique strategies.

The primary Pyro enabler in this team composition is Thoma, although Xiangling, Bennett, or Dehya can also be used to some extent. It's important to note that while Thoma's application speed for Burning reactions is generally slower than Xiangling's, he compensates for it by providing a shield for the on-field character.

Nahida excels as an off-field DPS and support, effortlessly maintaining the Burning reaction and boosting Elemental Mastery for the entire team. Equipped with Viridescent Venerer, Sucrose can debuff enemies, enhance the team's elemental mastery, and provide crowd control.

Another advantage of Sucrose is that players have more control over which element to infuse for her Burst, ideally choosing Cryo to boost Wriothesley's damage. This flexibility is particularly useful compared to Kazuha, who may struggle against enemies with self-infused elements. While adapting to the Burn-Melt playstyle can be challenging for some players, Wriothesley is an excellent character to experiment with this approach.

Wriothesley + Layla + Kazuha + Xingqiu

Sucrose's greater control over element infusion enhances the effectiveness of her Burst ability, with Cryo infusion being the optimal choice to amplify Wriothesley's damage. This attribute sets her apart from Kazuha, who may encounter difficulties when facing opponents with self-infused elements. Although the Burn-Melt playstyle can be challenging to adapt to, Wriothesley proves to be an exceptional character for players to explore this strategy with.

Wriothesley: Main DPS

Layla: Sub-DPS, Shielder

Kazuha: Buffer, Debuffer, Crowd Control

Xingqiu excels as a buffer and Hydro enabler. For players who are not inclined towards using Melt team compositions, Xingqiu can still be a valuable asset in building effective Freeze compositions. These compositions offer greater flexibility and ease of use compared to the burning-melt freeze option, thanks to a wider selection of Cryo, Hydro, and Anemo characters available for players to choose from.

For players who don't have Shenhe, Layla is a good alternative option. She can serve as both a Sub-DPS and shielder while also providing Cryo resonance for the team. However, those who do have Shenhe may find that she is a better fit.

Another option is Xingqiu, who excels as a Hydro applier with a low internal cooldown (ICD). He also provides some healing and resistance to interruption for Wriothesley, which helps maintain Maracchuse Hunter's 4-piece effect. However, if players are looking for more Sub-DPS potential, they can consider using Yelan as a substitute for Xingqiu.

Kazuha is also a strong choice, but players need to make sure that Cryo is swirled instead of Hydro by Xingqiu, unless they specifically need additional Hydro application. To achieve this, players can initiate Cryo application by using one normal attack with Wriothesley, then switch to Kazuha to start the rotation with his Burst and Skill. After that, they can activate Shenhe's and Xingqiu's Bursts before returning to Wriothesley and continuing his combo rotation until the Skill's duration ends, and then repeating the rotation.

Wriothesley + Ganyu + Kokomi + Ayato

Wonderous Wriothesley Squad: Ultimate Team Composition Guide for Genshin Impact

Wriothesley: Main DPS

Ganyu: Sub-DPS, Cryo application, Crowd Control,

Kokomi: Healer

Ayato: Sub / Main DPS, Hydro Application

Players looking for team compositions that offer both sub-DPS versatility and the ability to function as main DPS characters may find an alternative Freeze composition appealing. Ayato and Ganyu, while excellent as main DPS, also excel as off-field sub-DPS due to their long-duration Elemental Bursts, making them suitable for elemental application or stepping in as the primary DPS if needed.

However, it's important to note that this composition may not provide the same party-wide buffs as other options with highly invested support characters, resulting in slightly lower overall damage output. To fully maximize the potential of this team composition, players should prioritize maintaining the Elemental Bursts of Ganyu and Ayato in each rotation. Additionally, using Ganyu's and Kokomi's Elemental Skills between rotations is recommended, though Ayato may not need to use his Elemental Skill to ensure Wriothesley's extended time on the field. Kokomi's Elemental Burst should be reserved for situations requiring extensive healing, as freeze teams typically excel in crowd control and don't require frequent healing. This will also minimize her time on the field, allowing Wriothesley to be present as much as possible.

Wriothesley + Shenhe + Venti + Diona

Wonderous Wriothesley Squad: Ultimate Team Composition Guide for Genshin Impact

Wriothesley: Main DPS

Shenhe: Buffer

Venti: Buffer, Debuffer, Crowd Control, Battery

Diona: Healer, Shielder, Battery

Players may also opt for a mono-Cryo team composition, which works best when using Shenhe due to her significant Cryo damage boost. However, if Shenhe is not available, it might be more beneficial for players to focus on elemental reaction-based teams to fully maximize Wriothesley's potential. In this team setup, there are two adaptable slots for a Cryo character and an Anemo character, providing crowd control and buffing capabilities.

For the Anemo slot, Venti is a suitable choice. However, players can also consider Sucrose or Kazuha, particularly when facing bosses or agile enemies. Additionally, Diona can be included in the fourth slot, offering healing, shielding, and a battery function alongside Venti to ensure both Shenhe and Wriothesley can utilize their Bursts in every rotation. Alternatively, Zhongli can be chosen to lower the Elemental RES of enemies, as Geo and Anemo do not trigger reactions with each other. Since Wriothesley can sustain his own HP, having a powerful shielder without healing abilities remains effective in maintaining high HP for characters, even in challenging content.
