The upcoming indie game Palworld has been described as "Pokemon with guns," and it's unlike any other monster-collecting game out there. The game features elements of open-world exploration, survival-crafting mechanics, and third-person shooter gameplay, making it a unique experience. While many fans of the monster-collecting genre are intrigued by this title, its early access period beginning in January 2024 may not be the best timing if it wants to stand out from the competition. Palworld was first announced in Summer 2021 by developer Pocketpair, and its trailer quickly captured the attention of audiences with its over-the-top approach to the genre. Although the game has suffered delays, the promise of multiplayer, open-world gameplay with survival and crafting elements has players eagerly awaiting its release.
Palworld's Early Access Launch May Have to Compete with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's DLC
Palworld's "Pokemon with guns" gameplay will finally be available for players to experience in early access in January 2024. However, this coincides with the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's DLC, which may pose a challenge for Palworld's launch. As a smaller title compared to the popular Pokemon franchise, it would be unfortunate for Palworld to be overshadowed by its inspiration. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's DLC, titled The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, will be released in two waves. The Teal Mask is expected to launch sometime between September and November 2023, while The Indigo Disk's release date is less certain and could extend as far as January or February 2024.
The Indigo Disk's winter release window is bound to attract a significant portion of Pokemon and monster-collecting enthusiasts, potentially overshadowing Palworld. The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, despite being DLC for the existing Pokemon Scarlet and Violet games, boasts a plethora of fresh content that is likely to reignite excitement for the upcoming Gen 9 games and potentially deter any competition from rival games. Even if Palworld manages to introduce a novel twist to the genre, it may not be sufficient to capture the attention of an audience that is likely to be preoccupied with the much-anticipated release of The Indigo Disk.
Palworld, on the other hand, is already facing a peculiar predicament whereby it appears to promise numerous features that have yet to be demonstrated as cohesively functioning together. Despite having a devoted following and being showcased at events such as Summer Game Fest 2023, the untested game's odds of successfully competing with the behemoth that is Pokemon seem bleak. Perhaps it would be better off being released during a lull in the Pokemon development cycle, thereby providing fans with a temporary distraction until the next major release. Ultimately, the game's fortunes may hinge entirely on the timing of The Indigo Disk's DLC release, which is beyond Pocketpair's control.
Palworld launches in early access in January 2024 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
