Olivia Rodrigo is not holding back when it comes to expressing her feelings about a certain individual as a "bloodsucker, fame-seeker" in her latest song, "Vampire." But will this finally bring some relief to Joshua Bassett?
After gaining immense popularity with her chart-topping hit "Drivers License" more than two years ago, which sparked countless discussions online about a possible romantic triangle involving Rodrigo, Bassett, and Sabrina Carpenter, the 20-year-old "Brutal" singer has released the first single from her second album on Friday, June 30. Fans are convinced that she now has fresh inspiration.
Rodrigo is believed to have written the song "Vampire" about DJ Zack Bia, as indicated by various clues. The chorus lyrics, "I should've known it was strange / You only come out at night / I used to think I was smart / But you made me look so naive," imply a connection to Bia. The verse continues, "The way you sold me for parts / As you sunk your teeth into me, oh / Bloodsucker, famef—ker / Bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire."
Although Rodrigo and Bia were first seen together in April 2022, reports suggest they were spending time together as early as the Super Bowl in February 2022. In August 2022, we confirmed that the couple had ended their relationship, estimating its duration to be approximately six months.
“When I close my eyes, I glimpse the glamorous parties and sparkling diamonds / Painful months, masquerading as a forbidden paradise,” the lyrics of "Vampire" convey. "I loved you deeply / It's laughable how foolish I was."
Just prior to his relationship with Bia, Rodrigo was romantically linked to Madelyn Cline. (On the "BFFs" podcast in January 2022, he admitted to spending time with the Outer Banks star, but clarified they were not officially dating.) In "Vampire," Rodrigo sings about the age disparity between him and Bia, with her being seven years older, and mentions another woman closer to his age. (Bia recently celebrated her 27th birthday, while Cline is 25.)

She utters, "Oh, such an enchanting, immobilizing, messed up little excitement. I am unable to comprehend your method, and indeed, I will never understand. You chose me over her because girls your age possess more wisdom."
Rodrigo has not publicly disclosed the person she wrote "Vampire" about. However, in an interview with Apple Music, she shared that she collaborated with her producer Dan Nigro on the track in December 2022.
"I composed the song on the piano in a laid-back manner, back in December of the previous year. Then, in January, my producer Dan and I finalized it, including the lyrics," she clarified. "I have always been captivated by songs that possess a fluctuation in intensity. My favorite songs take you on a rollercoaster ride, evoking strong emotions. With 'Vampire,' we aimed to create a song that builds up continuously, channeling the suppressed anger one feels in a certain situation."
While some fans have already flooded Bia's social media pages with negative comments, questioning her compatibility with someone younger or her nocturnal activities, other listeners speculate that Rodrigo may be referencing her past relationship with Adam Faze.
The former Disney star and the producer dated for less than a year, with news of their breakup surfacing in February 2022, approximately seven months after they were first seen together in June 2021. (Twitter users suggest that June 30 may mark the two-year anniversary of their relationship's beginning.) Similar to Bia, Faze, now 26, is older than Rodrigo was during their time together, as she was 18.

It is noteworthy that Rodrigo considers herself a self-proclaimed Twihard. Consequently, "Vampire" might find its inspiration in the films featuring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart rather than her personal relationships.
Rodrigo is gearing up to release her second album, Guts, on September 8, as the online buzz surrounding her continues. The title was actually chosen while she was working on her first album, Sour. "I knew I wanted the next one to be called Guts," she shared with Zane Lowe. "I envisioned it as a four-letter word in all caps, just like Sour. I find it fascinating because it can be used in various contexts, like 'spill your guts' or 'hate your guts.' It's a really intriguing term." Rodrigo sees the title as representative of bravery and intuition, urging listeners to trust their instincts. These themes tie into her personal reflections during this stage of her life. Additionally, she mentioned that the album serves as a chronicle of her experiences during her 19th year, which bodes well for Bassett, who continued with High School Musical: The Musical: The Series despite Rodrigo's departure.
"I had a year full of confusion, mistakes, awkwardness, and good old fashioned teenage angst," she expressed to her fans earlier this month. "Words cannot describe the level of excitement I feel about starting this new phase of my life with all of you."
