Set to release on September 8, Guts is the highly anticipated follow-up to the 2021 debut LP, Sour, by the talented 20-year-old artist. Rodrigo took to Instagram on June 26 to express her excitement, stating, "I am incredibly proud of this record and eagerly look forward to sharing it with all of you!" Accompanied by the album cover, the image features the singer lying against a captivating dark purple backdrop, wearing a black tank top that reveals a glimpse of a purple satin bra, while her rings spell out the title, Guts.

What Inspired Olivia Rodrigo’s 2nd Album?

The Grammy Award winner expressed that Guts revolves around personal development. "This album, to me, delves into the challenges of growing up and discovering my identity in the current stage of my life," Rodrigo conveyed in a press release issued in June. "Between the ages of 18 and 20, I felt like I matured a decade—it was an immensely transformative and awkward period. I believe this is a natural part of growth, and I hope that the album captures that essence."

Rodrigo will release a new song called “Vampire” on June 30. It will be her first single since “Brutal” received a music video in August 2021.

During the month of May, the individual hailing from California dropped a subtle hint on her Instagram account regarding the lyrics of her upcoming song. She uploaded a picture displaying the query, "what is the method behind deception?" recurring three consecutive times. In accompaniment to the handwritten phrase, she added a vampire emoji as the caption.

Rodrigo recorded with producer Daniel Nigro, who previously worked with the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series alum on Sour.

The album reached quadruple platinum status, earning Sour's creator numerous accolades at the Grammys, including Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Pop Vocal Album. Looking ahead, Rodrigo already anticipates a shift in her musical direction. In an interview with Clash in August 2021, she revealed that her next album is likely to be considerably more cheerful compared to her previous record.

The former cast member of The New Girl hinted that her evolving taste will be evident in her next album.

After completing the recording of her second LP, Rodrigo shared that Guts will still feature some emo vibes. In a June newsletter to her fans, she expressed, "I crafted the majority of this album during my nineteenth year, a year that was marked by confusion, mistakes, awkwardness, and classic teenage angst." She further revealed that she collaborated with her friend Dan in both New York and L.A., and expressed her immense pride in the album. Rodrigo concluded by expressing her excitement to embark on this new phase of her life alongside her fans, with a planned release date of September 8th.
