In Baldur's Gate 3, if players choose to ally with the Harpers and druids, they will come across a sleeping man named Art Cullagh at the Last Light Inn. Art, a former Flaming Fist mercenary, has mysteriously emerged from the Shadowfell after a century but is now devoid of consciousness.
Cullagh's state cannot be altered by spells or potions, but there is a means to revive his senses. Before proceeding, players need to visit their Baldur's Gate 3 camp and have a conversation with Halsin.
Halsin's Information
If players aligned themselves with the refugees and druids during Act 1, they will find Halsin patiently waiting at the campsite. His goal is to restore the Shadow-Cursed Lands to their original splendor, and he believes that Art Cullagh may hold the key to achieving this.
When players attempt to engage Cullagh in conversation, he unexpectedly mentions a name: Thaniel. Halsin immediately recognizes it as the name of the land spirit and promptly decides to depart for the Last Light Inn. Players can leave the camp to discover Halsin already present at Cullagh's side in the inn. Halsin proposes the idea of finding a trigger that can return Cullagh to the present, but he admits to having no knowledge of what to search for or where to begin.
Fortunately, players should already have a clue about where to look. After speaking to Fist J'ehlar, Cullagh's caretaker, he gives the party his final order, instructing Cullagh to investigate the House of Healing. To find the House of Healing, head to the north end of the western side of the map. Before proceeding with this quest, it is recommended to obtain either a Moonlantern or a Pixie Blessing.
How to Deal with Malus Thorm
The domain of Malus Thorm, one of the corrupted Thorm siblings, is known as the House of Healing. Upon encountering him, players will find him delivering a lecture infused with the darkness to the "Sisters" within the operating theater. Should the players decline Malus's proposal to conduct experiments on them, a fierce boss battle will ensue. However, there is also the possibility of negotiating a peaceful resolution to avoid direct confrontation.
The operating theater is a spacious octagonal chamber visible on the map. Adjacent to the theater is a smaller room containing locked doors on each side. Players have the option to either unlock these doors or demolish them with attacks that inflict a minimum of 10 damage. Upon entering this room, players will discover a valuable book titled "Surgery and Physiology: A Sharran's Primer." Reading this book will greatly enhance their chances of successfully dealing with Malus without engaging in combat.
Approaching Malus Thorm initiates a conversation where players have the opportunity to convince him against immediately dissecting the party by making an Investigation, Religion, or Persuasion check. Following this, players then face another check where they can suggest either the Sisters practicing on one another or on Malus himself. To improve the chances of success in convincing Malus, players can read Malus's book beforehand, reducing the difficulty for the "practice on Malus" check from 21 to 18 and gaining a new opportunity for an Intimidation check.
Successfully navigating these social interactions will immediately end Malus Thorm's life. However, failing either of these checks will result in a battle against Malus and four Sisters. Malus begins with 276 hit points and starts to launch multiple attacks once he reaches 110 hit points.
Regardless of the outcome, players will discover various valuable items on Malus's corpse, such as a damaged lute. Take this lute to Cullagh and play a few musical notes to rouse him from slumber. At this stage, if Halsim is not already present, Cullagh will inquire about his whereabouts. The journey to revive the Shadow-Cursed Lands persists after this, but the task of "Awakening Art Cullagh" concludes once he awakens.
