Each class in Baldur's Gate 3 offers unique abilities and utility for combat, dialog, and exploration. The Barbarian class, like the others, has its own distinct advantages.
The Barbarian class in Baldur's Gate 3 emphasizes strength and durability as its primary attributes. With the highest base HP among all classes and abilities like Rage, Barbarians can withstand enemy attacks while dealing significant damage themselves. The Barbarian's subclasses are designed to enhance their fighting style and tap into other sources of power that fuel their rage. The Berserker utilizes Frenzy for greater offensive advantages, the Wildheart taps into primal animal aspects for additional powers during a rage, and the Wild Magic Barbarian harnesses chaotic magic to empower their rage and strengthen their body.
Berserker
The Berserker Subclass introduces a more advanced form of Barbarian Rage, known as "Frenzy." Along with all the benefits of a regular Rage, Frenzy also unlocks the abilities "Frenzied Strike" and "Enraged Throw." These additional actions allow the Berserker to unleash an extra attack or hurl a nearby object/creature, respectively, using only a Bonus Action. Consequently, this enables the Berserker to consistently deal heightened damage while in a state of rage, establishing them as an exceptional choice for players prioritizing damage output.
Wildheart
The Wildheart Subclass, which is a revamped version of the Totem Warrior found in D&D 5e Tabletop, grants the Barbarian the choice of a Bestial Heart at level 3. Each Bestial Heart provides distinctive bonus effects while the Barbarian is in a state of rage, along with granting access to a unique action during rage. The corresponding information is illustrated in the table below:
Bestial Heart | Rage Benefit | Power |
Bear Heart | Resistance to all Damage Types except Psychic Damage. | Unrelenting Ferocity: Healing as an Action. |
Eagle Heart | Foes have disadvantage on opportunity attacks against the character, and the ability to dash as a bonus action. | Diving Strike: Leap onto a foe below the character to knock them prone and deal damage. |
Elk Heart | Movement Speed increased by 4.5m. | Primal Stampede: Charge Forward dealing Bludgeoning Damage and knocking foes Prone). |
Tiger Heart | Jump distance increased by 4.5m. | Tiger's Bloodlust: Lash out to hit up to three enemies with an attack that causes bleeding. |
Wolf Heart | Gain advantage on attack rolls on targets within 2m. | Inciting Howl: Howl to boost the movement of all allies in range by 3m for 1 turn. |
As an additional benefit, Wild Heart Barbarians are able to cast "Speak with Animals," which can be very useful when not in combat.
Wild Magic
The Wild Magic Subclass is not accessible in the Early Access version of the game, hence all the details in this section are derived from information provided by the developers or the 5e Tabletop rules.
Upon entering a Rage, Wild Magic Barbarians initiate a Wild Magic Surge similar to that of a Wild Magic Sorcerer casting spells. This surge is powered by a vast array of random effects. Additionally, they have the ability to utilize their wild magic to bolster both themselves and their allies. Furthermore, they can restore expended spell slots for their companions.
A Wild Magic Barbarian can trigger a fresh Wild Magic Surge whenever they suffer damage or fail a saving throw while raging.
Baldur's Gate 3 will be released on August 3, 2023, for PC and Mac, and on September 6, 2023, for PS5.
