Upcoming: Unveiling the 'Way of Water': Get Ready for 'Avatar 3' in 2025

Prior to the release of Avatar: The Way of Water in December 2022, director James Cameron had already completed most of the filming for the third installment in the franchise. Cameron revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he had filmed sections of both the third and fourth films in order to prevent the "Stranger Things effect," where child actors experience significant growth between films.

"The characters are meant to be high school students but they look much older," said the director in December 2022 when discussing the Netflix series. "I still love the show and we can overlook the age difference. The characters are great, but you know."

Cameron continued by describing Jack Champion, who plays human teen Spider in The Way of The Water, as a "rapidly growing youngster." He further mentioned, "We filmed with Jack when he was 14 and 15, almost reaching 16, over an 18-month period."

'Avatar 3' Is Coming in 2025: Everything to Know About the 'Way of Water' Sequel

Cameron revealed to Entertainment Weekly that he had filmed portions of the third and fourth installments in order to prevent the "Stranger Things effect," in which child actors experience significant growth between films.

"The director commented in December 2022 on the Netflix series, remarking that all the characters are supposed to still be in high school but appear much older. Despite this, he expressed his love for the show and willingness to suspend disbelief due to his fondness for the characters. Cameron also described Jack Champion, who portrays the human teen Spider in The Way of The Water, as a "growing weed," noting that they shot with Jack from ages 14 to almost 16 over an 18-month period."

When Does 'Avatar 3' Premiere?

The third Avatar movie, originally scheduled to be released in December 2024, was pushed back by director James Cameron in November 2023. He cited a busy two-year post-production schedule and announced that the new release date would be Christmas 2025 during the 2023 Screen Production and Development Association conference in New Zealand.

Who's Coming Back for 'Avatar 3'?

Returning to their roles from The Way of Water will be Worthington, Saldana, Lang, Weaver, and Champion. Curtis, Pounder, and Winslet are also expected to reprise their roles as the Na'vi from Avatar 2, with Chaplin, Thewlis, and Yeoh joining the cast in new roles.

What Is 'Avatar 3' About?

Cameron has been tight-lipped about the storyline of Avatar 3, but he has hinted that the film might be titled Avatar: The Seed Bearer. Even though Jake and his family have found a home with the Metkayina, Pandora is still facing threats from Quaritch and the humans. Additionally, there is the unresolved mystery of Kiri's parentage, which was intentionally left ambiguous in The Way of Water.

How Much of 'Avatar 3' Is Filmed?

Avatar 3 completed principal filming in December 2020, but the post-production work including visual effects and editing is still ongoing. Rumors in December 2022 suggested that the initial edit of the third installment of the film series runs over nine hours long.

Will There Be More 'Avatar' Movies?

Cameron has announced that there are plans for at least two more sequels following Avatar 3. Parts of Avatar 4 were filmed simultaneously with The Way of Water and Avatar 3, with a tentative release date set for 2026. Avatar 5 is expected to be released in 2028, and producer Jon Landau has indicated that it will focus on Neytiri's visit to Earth. If these films are successful, Cameron has also mentioned potential plans for a sixth and seventh installment.
