The much-awaited sequels of Avatar have faced a delay, causing a flurry of reactions on Twitter. After the immense success of the first movie in 2009, James Cameron brought Pandora's world back to the big screen with Avatar: The Way of Water, which was a blockbuster hit. The Sully family saga further continued with the confirmation of three more sequels.
However, the latest news confirms that Avatar 3, 4, and 5 will now release in 2025, 2029, and 2031, respectively. Fans of the franchise have expressed their disappointment on social media, with some even questioning how old they will be when the saga finally concludes. A few of these tweets can be found below:
The Avatar Sequels Delays Aren't Surprising
Creating the visually stunning world of Avatar is no easy feat and with each installment, the production team faces new challenges. While Avatar 3 may not require the same level of technological innovation as its predecessor, the process of bringing the franchise's breathtaking visuals to life still demands a significant amount of time and effort. Producer Jon Landau recently acknowledged this in a tweet explaining the delay. The fact that filming for Avatar 3 has not yet been completed also contributes to the delay of the subsequent films. While Sigourney Weaver confirmed that most of the movie has been shot, additional "pickup" scenes are still needed, pushing back the release date from its original 2024 plan.
Filming for the final two sequels of Avatar has yet to begin, except for the first act of Avatar 4. The previously announced release dates of 2026 and 2028 now seem less probable due to the recent delays. However, the extended production time could result in equally impressive sequels to the first two films, which is good news for fans of the franchise.
