World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is set to receive three additional content updates before the launch of the MMORPG's next expansion, The War Within, in the summer of 2024. According to Blizzard's 2024 content roadmap for WoW, players can anticipate new content for both the current version of the MMO and the different versions of WoW Classic.
Dragonflight's Seeds of Renewal update is set to arrive in January, allowing players to run dungeons with NPC companions and bring dragonriding to all of Azeroth. The game's 10.2.6 patch remains a mystery, but is indicated on the roadmap by an ominous skull and crossbones. Then, in the spring, Dragonflight Season 4 will begin, with Blizzard retooling existing raids and introducing new open-world rewards, similar to Shadowlands Season 4.
Patch 10.2.7 in Spring 2024 marks the start of the build-up to the new expansion, with the introduction of new story quests related to The Harbinger, the Old God servant Xal'atath, who will play a significant role in The War Within. This update will also bring long-awaited Heritage Armor quests for Trolls and Draenei characters, as well as a new holiday event. Alpha testing for The War Within will commence in the spring, followed by beta testing in the summer.
The upcoming pre-patch for the next expansion, update 11.0.1, is set to be released later this summer, before The War Within's launch. This update will feature the highly anticipated Warbands feature that garnered attention when it was first announced at BlizzCon 2023, allowing different characters on the same account to share progression and rewards.
Before the end of the year, The War Within will receive a content update that will bring new story content and introduce WoW's 20th Anniversary event, the details of which Blizzard is keeping secret for now.
On the WoW Classic side of things, WoW Season of Discovery will feature regular content updates every few months, including a solo-self found mode for Hardcore players coming in the spring. The launch of WoW Cataclysm Classic is set for the summer, with additional content updates planned before the end of the year.
This marks the second year that Blizzard has outlined the future of WoW in such detail. In a blog post, executive producer Holly Longdale emphasized the importance of delivering on promises, expressing gratitude to the WoW development team for making it all a reality.
“With our commitment to providing content for all styles of play in World of Warcraft, you can always look forward to new experiences just around the corner,” Longdale stated.
The War Within is set to be the inaugural expansion in The Worldsoul Saga, a three-part narrative revealed by Blizzard at this year's BlizzCon. Chris Metzen, the executive creative director of Warcraft, announced on stage at BlizzCon that Blizzard aims to release The Worldsoul Saga expansions at a faster pace than its typical biennial cycle for MMO expansions.
