In Tears of the Kingdom, the Great Fairy questline has been revitalized, providing a more enjoyable and engaging experience for players looking to upgrade their armor.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom heavily draws inspiration from its predecessor, Breath of the Wild, which serves as the foundation for its advancements. Despite rendering the older game seemingly outdated, Breath of the Wild allows Hyrule to possess a vast and intricate environment. The inclusion of personalized dungeons and the highly acclaimed arm powers in Tears of the Kingdom are only possible due to the groundwork laid by its predecessor.
A significant breakthrough in TotK is the introduction of Side Adventures, a novel type of quest. These quests are substantially larger and more intricate than typical side quests, encompassing the entire realm of Hyrule. Within Tears of the Kingdom, players can embark on 60 Side Adventures, with exceptional ones like "Master Kohga of the Yiga Clan" standing out for their scale and intricacy. Unlike any other supplementary content, the revamped Great Fairy questline takes on a fundamental role in Tears of the Kingdom.
Breath of the Wild's Great Fairies Were A Mixed Bag
In Breath of the Wild, the four Great Fairies played a crucial role. Players were likely introduced to the first one near Kakariko Village and would then seek out the others. While armor upgrades weren't always necessary, the Great Fairies themselves offered a unique reward that set the stage for endgame enhancements. They were seamlessly integrated into Hyrule, often linked to side quests, with a surprising twist in the form of Malanya the Horse God.
However, the Great Fairy Fountains did have some drawbacks. They were scattered throughout the map, with the farthest one located in the bottom left corner of the Gerudo Desert. Additionally, due to their weakened state, the Great Fairies required a substantial amount of rupees to regain their power, and rupees were scarce in Breath of the Wild. The escalating cost for each subsequent Fairy led to a staggering total of 11,600 rupees just to unlock the ability to fully upgrade equipment with other materials. This aspect had ample room for improvement, and Tears of the Kingdom thankfully made strides to rectify it.
The Great Fairy Side Adventure Makes TotK's Progression Fun
Players can initiate their interaction with the Great Fairies of Tears of the Kingdom in two ways: by either seeking out a Fairy Fountain and being turned away, or by participating in the Serenade to a Great Fairy Side Adventure at Woodland Stable. These fairies no longer require large rupee donations as before. Due to the recent Gloom outpouring during the Upheaval in Hyrule, the fairies have become scattered and too fearful to leave their flowers. However, this has resulted in a positive outcome. They have moved closer to the center of Hyrule, bringing additional benefits.
In addition to the larger Potential Princess Sightings! Side Adventure with the Lucky Clover Gazette, the Great Fairies now offer quests that involve assisting a group of traveling musicians located at specific Stables. Players can complete these quests in any order after visiting the first Fairy Fountain, unless they haven't yet found the desired musician for a particular Fountain. The quests integrate Ultrahand puzzles that combine elements from Shrines with Korok travelers. This unique fusion provides a more enjoyable way to interact with the Great Fairies of Tears of the Kingdom, which is crucial considering the significance of armor upgrades in the game. Few aspects of Tears of the Kingdom offer such substantial improvements.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available now for Nintendo Switch.
