Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has announced that there will be up to four additional prequel series to follow the success of 1883 and 1923. The Western drama has garnered a massive live audience, with the latest episode of season 5, episode 8, drawing 8.19 million viewers on Paramount Network. Alongside the two prequels already in production for Paramount+, 1883 and 1923, there are currently four other shows in development.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Sheridan disclosed that, apart from season 5 part 2 and the previously announced shows, there are three to four more prequels in the pipeline. He also mentioned that the budget for each sequel could rival that of a season of Game of Thrones.
The prequels serve as time capsules, offering a glimpse into life in Montana that mirrors the world at large. They are grand spectacles, growing in scale as they progress into the modern era. Paramount takes a significant risk with each installment, investing Game of Thrones season six-level funding into what essentially acts as a pilot every year. It's a bold request, but as long as I continue to excel at my job and the audience remains engaged with the genre, I believe there is potential for three or four more prequels. Chris McCarthy places his trust in me because I have yet to disappoint.
How Many Yellowstone Shows Will There Be?
Sheridan's estimation of additional Yellowstone prequels does not take into account the possibility of 1944, a sequel to the 1923 prequel that was announced in early 2023. Moreover, his estimation does not factor in Lawmen: Bass Reeves, a spinoff centered around the first Black US Deputy Marshal, which is also set in the same time period as 1883. If neither 1944 nor Lawmen: Bass Reeves are considered in Sheridan's calculation, it is conceivable that there may be as many as six more Yellowstone prequels yet to be broadcast.
Sheridan's unannounced Yellowstone prequels are progressively delving into more recent time periods, as seen through the year-based titles of 1883, 1923, and 1944. This implies that the overall history of Yellowstone Ranch and the Dutton family will have been unveiled by the time these prequels are aired. With a wide array of time periods at their disposal, the possibilities for future Yellowstone prequels are endless.
In addition to the prequels, Sheridan is also involved in a Yellowstone spinoff featuring Matthew McConaughey, which appears to take place after the events of the original series. Another spinoff titled 6666, revolving around the Four Sixes Ranch, is currently in production. Even with the conclusion of Yellowstone in its fifth season, there will continue to be an abundance of series within the Yellowstone universe. The true extent of the Yellowstone franchise's success remains to be seen as more prequels are announced in the forthcoming future.
