Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty introduces new characters and allows players to explore a new section of Night City. However, some characters can die based on player choices.
The deaths in Phantom Liberty have a more significant impact than regular NPC deaths within the game, as players have the opportunity to become acquainted with the characters and their viewpoints before making choices that result in their demise.
Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the game Cyperpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty and its story. If you have either finished the main story of the base game or are looking for fresh content to accompany your initial playthrough, the paid DLC expansion Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is now available on next-gen consoles. This expansion opens up a completely new area of Night City for players to explore and introduces V, the protagonist, to a whole new cast of characters who come to life within the game.
However, it is important to note that, given the dystopian nature of the Cyberpunk universe, these characters are also susceptible to death. While death is not a common occurrence in the overall franchise, Cyberpunk 2077 can be quite dark at times, and various non-playable characters have fallen victim to the circumstances surrounding V. In Phantom Liberty, V, at the very least, finds themselves caught up as an innocent bystander in a web of betrayal stemming from CP 2077's Unification War. Nonetheless, there are still a few characters who pay the ultimate price.
Every Death in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty Explained
Phantom Liberty introduces a slight change in tone compared to the main story of Cyberpunk 2077. However, it may be unsettling for players to see that the DLC only allows a small number of significant characters to meet their demise directly. The most notable deaths are a result of player choices, with the options varying depending on whether the player sides with Songbird or Reed in the end. This means that the available choices involve killing the character that was not chosen initially. It is understandable that choosing between these two important characters in the expansion would have a significant impact, but the deaths in Phantom Liberty add to the list of deaths in Cyberpunk 2077's main campaign.
Here are all the major deaths in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty:
Slider - When attempting to reconnect with V using Songbird, Slider is ambushed by the Blackwall AIs. He lets out a cry of agony and succumbs to death, trapped behind the treacherous firewall.
Songbird - If players align themselves with Reed, they will have to pursue Songbird within a Cynosure facility and navigate through the Blackwall. Eventually, Songbird confesses her fading state and asserts that death is the sole path to a peaceful resolution. Players have the option to grant So Mi's plea and take her life.
Alex and Kurt Hansen's clash takes a tragic turn when So Mi harnesses otherworldly power beyond the Blackwall. With Songbird's assistance, Kurt ultimately ends Alex's life.
In the scenario where players align with Reed, Kurt becomes a formidable obstacle in their attempt to break free from the Black Sapphire. He assumes the role of a formidable adversary, preventing V from pursuing Songbird. Consequently, players are left with no choice but to eliminate Kurt. In doing so, Reed expresses gratitude towards V and remarks, "that was for Alex."
If fans choose to support Songbird, they will be tasked with carrying her body through the facility in order to make their escape. However, Reed will block their path in a tunnel and demand that V hands over So Mi to him. Players have the option to fight back by taking out their weapon and shooting Reed to kill him.
While there is not a significant amount of death in the Phantom Liberty DLC compared to the adventures in Night City, the deaths that do occur are important characters in the Phantom Liberty storyline. This means that the impact of player actions will be much greater than a typical failed side quest or the death of an NPC in a questline centered around them. This only serves to strengthen the DLC's narrative, as players have had the opportunity to get to know these characters and their perspectives, which will likely influence the decisions that lead to their deaths. It is possible to achieve an ending where both Reed and Songbird survive, ensuring that a good number of V's companions are still alive by the end of the DLC.
Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is available now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
