Cyberpunk 2077's Redemption: From Failure to Phenomenon

Cyberpunk 2077 makes its way into New York's Museum of Failure, showcasing the game's rocky launch and subsequent redemption as one of the best open-world titles of the current generation

The release of the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 was a letdown for many, and the game's infamy has even reached beyond the gaming industry. New York's Museum of Failure exhibition now features CD Projekt Red's 2020 RPG as a prime example. While it's considered one of the most disastrous launches in recent memory, the game has made significant improvements over time. Today, it's considered one of the best open-world games of the current generation. However, this recognition didn't come easy, and it took a while for the title to earn it.

Fortunately, the studio was able to turn things around eventually, but there was a time when Cyberpunk 2077 had to be recalled. Many fans considered the game almost unplayable, especially on previous-gen consoles. It's not easy to recover from such reputational damage, but CDPR made amends and improved the game significantly. It was given a second chance, but it seems that the initial launch and subsequent backlash will likely haunt the developer for some time.

As reported by The Gamer, a Reddit user by the name of p4ul1023 has discovered that Cyberpunk 2077 is now on display for all to see. The user uploaded an image to the site, which shows an exhibit detailing the game and acknowledging that it didn't quite live up to expectations. According to the exhibit, the game was "full of bugs," which led to "angry fans" seeking refunds. The display can be found at the Museum of Failure in Brooklyn, which features other cultural letdowns like the DeLorean car from Back to the Future and Google Glass. Interestingly, this isn't the first video game to be featured in the museum, as p4ul1023's photo also shows information for the ill-fated ET adaptation that was released for Atari in 1982.

Fortunately, things have improved significantly for CD Projekt Red since then. With numerous patches released over the past two and a half years, Cyberpunk 2077 is in a much better state than it was at its launch in December 2020. Although it's still not perfect, the open-world game has come a long way and is now several leagues ahead of where it was.

In addition, the upcoming release of Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty DLC has fans eagerly anticipating its arrival, although an official release date has yet to be announced. CD Projekt Red has also confirmed a sequel for 2022, alongside their development of a new installment of The Witcher series. With the hope that the developers have learned from their mistakes, many are looking forward to a successful launch for the next Cyberpunk installment. Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
