Method Three: Descending Gracefully in Twin "Endless" Passageways
The initial segment of Baldur's Gate 3 unravels amidst the wreckage of the Nautiloid and the enchanting Druid Grove, nestled within a stunning and tumultuous landscape abundant with life. As players immerse themselves in the majestic world, they may find themselves astounded by the breadth and depth of the game, reaching the 10-hour mark in Act 1 only to discover that they have yet to traverse even half of its captivating expanse.
Method One: Elevator at the Zhentarim Hideout
Exploring the vast and densely populated Act 1 of BG3 reveals an astonishing hidden world known as The Underdark. This mysterious and treacherous network of vibrant caverns is not only home to various races but also considered a perilous deathtrap by others. In the entirety of Baldur's Gate 3, the initial Act offers four distinct routes that lead to the majestic and dangerous realms of the Underdark. To the north of the Waukeen's Rest Waypoint, in the farthest northwestern region of the Act 1 map, lies the Zhentarim Hideout. Once players have rescued the trapped victims from a blazing structure, they can venture into a nearby shack to the west. Little do they know, they will encounter a Sorcerer who awaits within.
If players choose not to kill the Sorcerer, they have the option to navigate through the hideout without causing any alarm by utilizing Ability Checks. By successfully convincing a few additional characters, they can easily make their way through to the hideout. Located in the northeast of the hideout, there is an illusory wall concealing a hidden room. Within this room, players with keen passive Perception will uncover a Secret Elevator leading to the Underdark. However, in order to operate the elevator, players must either utilize Lockpicking skills to unlock it or discreetly steal a Mechanical Key from a nearby guard.
It is advisable to save the game and proceed with the most stealthy companion in order to avoid alerting any remaining outlaws, if the decision was made to spare them.
Method Two: Selune's Puzzle in the Defiled Temple
In the Defiled Temple, accessed through a doorway in the western Shattered Sanctum, players will find the Goblin Camp's HQ. Here, they can choose to defeat or ally with three True Souls in order to save the Druid Grove. By using a lockpick on the doorway, players can enter the Defiled Temple where they will encounter an Ogress. To proceed, players can either defeat the Ogress or pass a Dialogue Check.
Continuing through the temple, players will come across a room with four circles on the ground. These circles can be rotated and have slots that can be filled or left empty. The objective is to align all four empty slots on the bottom circle, where light enters from above. Once accomplished, players can flip a lever at the opposite end of the room, allowing them to progress deeper into the Underdark, specifically to the Selunite Outpost.
Method Three: Feather Fall In Two "Bottomless" Tunnels
To reach The Underdark, players can utilize a consistent method in two distinct locations. By utilizing the Feather Fall ability, they can effectively avoid any damage caused by falling from great heights. In Act 1, players can locate two pits that they can jump down into in order to access The Underdark.
The initial pit that leads to The Underdark can be found within the Whispering Depths, which serves as the dwelling place for a formidable Phase Spider Matriarch and other spider-like adversaries. The Phase Spider Matriarch is a formidable boss with significant health and numerous allies. It is crucial to eliminate the additional enemies first before focusing on defeating the Matriarch when she becomes the sole remaining threat. Eventually, players will reach the end of the tunnel, where the Matriarch was previously patrolling, and encounter the pit leading to The Underdark.
The Underdark's second pit is located deep beneath Auntie Ethel's Teahouse. It can be found at the end of a sprawling cave that descends from the fireplace above. Within this cave, players will encounter the Hag and see Mayrina hanging precariously above a chasm.
To safely descend into the Underdark, players should ensure that all party members are equipped with Feather Fall before reaching the pit in the Whispering Depths or the chasm within the Hag's lair. Additionally, enabling Turn-Based Mode is advised. Each character should then take the leap, either into the pit or the chasm, to elegantly descend into the depths of the Underdark.
Baldur's Gate 3 is available for PC, and is set to release on PlayStation 5 on September 6, 2023.
