Summary
The appearance of The Wild Hunt in The Witcher season 3 may disappoint fans as it only occurred once. However, this decision stays true to the books where their role is introduced later on.The Witcher series is expected to feature a more prominent presence of The Wild Hunt in its sixth season, taking inspiration from the novels.
The fate of The Witcher series, along with the significance attributed to The Wild Hunt, hinges upon the reception of season 4 and the successful implementation of casting changes.
In The Witcher season 3, the search for Ciri intensifies as various factions, such as the Wild Hunt, are eager to capture her due to her Elder Blood. However, disappointingly, the Wild Hunt has very limited screen time in this season. The Wild Hunt was initially mentioned in season 1, as they were supposedly seen prior to Nilfgaard's attack on Cintra, in accordance with their reputation as harbingers of war. It was in the season 2 finale that the Wild Hunt made their first physical appearance, albeit briefly, when Ciri, Yennefer, and Geralt were transported to another dimension. In that fleeting moment, they encountered the Wild Hunt and the Voleth Meir, solidifying the Wild Hunt's status as a formidable threat. Throughout season 3, Ciri, Yennefer, and Geralt strive to remain united and safe, while being pursued by half of the Continent, including the Wild Hunt. Although season 3 delves deeper into the elves, the White Flame, and Rience's attempts to capture Ciri, the Wild Hunt takes a backseat and only makes a single appearance. However, this omission is consistent with the storyline presented in the books.
The Wild Hunt Weren't Supposed To Have A Big Role In The Witcher Season 3 (Based On The Books)
The conclusion of The Witcher season 2 hinted at the involvement of the Wild Hunt in season 3, particularly since they had a motive to pursue Ciri (which hasn't been fully explored yet in the series). However, the group only made a brief appearance when Ciri was fleeing from Yennefer and the sorceresses. The Wild Hunt emerged behind her, prompting Ciri to stay composed by reminding herself that they were merely spectral beings and not real. Nonetheless, one of the knights made physical contact with her before Geralt intervened, causing them to vanish, leaving behind a piece of their armor in this realm.
Although the limited portrayal of the Wild Hunt in The Witcher season 3 may have been disappointing considering its setup in season 2, it shouldn't come as a surprise when considering the source material. The Wild Hunt assumes a more significant role in Ciri's storyline much later on and is among the most unsettling narratives in The Witcher saga. Once they become aware of Ciri and her Elder Blood, they target her for capture so that she can mate with their king. By doing so, they hope to reintroduce Elder Blood to the elves, thus reclaiming their power and gaining access to the Gate of the Worlds.
Will The Wild Hunt Have A Bigger Role In The Witcher Season 4 Or Later?
Netflix's The Witcher has followed a pattern of adapting one of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels per season. With season 3 focusing on Time of Contempt and season 4 expected to cover Baptism of Fire, it seems that the Wild Hunt will not play a major role in the series until season 6 when The Lady of the Lake is tackled. This is the season in which Ciri journeys to the Aen Elle realm and encounters the wise Avallac'h, who elucidates her Elven lineage and the prophecy that her child will possess unparalleled magical abilities capable of averting a catastrophe. Reluctantly, Ciri agrees to bear this child with their King, Auberon, but unfortunately, the King fails to fulfill his part of the arrangement.
Considering the source material, it is doubtful that the Wild Hunt will feature prominently in Netflix's The Witcher anytime soon. With season 4 as the only season confirmed thus far, the series' future hinges on how well it is received by critics and viewers, especially following the recasting of Geralt.
