Netflix’s newest competition series is bringing the world of Squid Game to life.
Drawing inspiration from the popular South Korean drama, Squid Game: The Challenge will feature 456 individuals vying for the largest cash prize in reality TV history. Participants will take on a variety of challenges based on the games from Squid Game, with the group steadily dwindling until only one winner emerges.
In the official teaser for the show, set to air in September 2023, one contestant boldly declares, "People have done much worse for far less."
Squid Game quickly became one of Netflix's top original series after its debut in September 2021. The storyline revolves around Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, and a group of individuals experiencing financial difficulties who participate in the lethal Squid Game in a bid to claim the prize of 45.6 billion won (equivalent to approximately $38 million in U.S. dollars).
The series was officially renewed for a second season in June 2022.

What Are the Controversies Surrounding ‘Squid Game: The Challenge?’
The production of Squid Game: The Challenge in the U.K. sparked numerous controversies, as former contestants alleged mistreatment and inadequate working conditions in a shocking exposé by Rolling Stone in February 2023.
"It was the most cruel and heartless experience I've ever had," one contestant expressed. "We were treated like horses in a race, out in the cold, and the outcome was predetermined."
Another participant chimed in, "The suffering and distress we endured wasn't because of the game itself or its challenges. It was because they took on more than they could handle."

Amidst numerous accusations, a group of ex-players alleged that participants were forced to endure up to nine hours in a frigid airport hangar during the filming of the Red Light, Green Light game, and at times were unable to move for a duration of 30 minutes. Medical aid was provided to players who struggled with the harsh weather conditions.
Netflix has defended the safety of the show, stating that any claims of rigging or harm to players are false. They emphasized that they have taken appropriate safety measures and are providing aftercare for contestants. An independent adjudicator is also overseeing each game to ensure fairness. Additionally, the series has undergone a safety assessment by Britain’s Health and Safety Executive, which resulted in no further action being taken after concerns were addressed by the producers.
How Did ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ Producers Decide Which Contestants to Highlight?

With over 400 contestants competing for the top prize, not all of them could be featured on screen.
Executive producer Stephen Lambert admitted to breaking all the rules in an interview with Today.com in November 2023. "You're not supposed to have more than 20 players if you want to create a successful unscripted show. We had 456. So, that was a huge challenge."
Fellow executive producer John Hay supplemented: “Our only option was to observe the events, identify those who volunteered, discover who stood out, and explore intriguing relationships (and) include as many people as possible."

Similar to how other reality TV shows have confessionals, Squid Game: The Challenge contestants spoke directly to cameras in the “processing room.”
Lambert described the interviews as a form of therapy, where players opened up about their lives, families, and hopes before entering the game.
