The popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a fresh adaptation on Netflix.
Co-created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original Nickelodeon series aired for three seasons from 2005 to 2008. Avatar chronicles the adventure of Aang (voiced by Zach Tyler Eisen), an extraordinary being known as the "Avatar," who possesses the ability to manipulate (or "bend") all four elements. With the guidance of siblings Katara (Mae Whitman) and Sokka (Jack De Sena), Aang embarks on a journey to master his bending skills and unite the Water, Earth, Fire, and Air nations.
Netflix announced in September 2018 that they would be adapting the series into a live-action version. Initially, the creators, DiMartino and Konietzko, were on board as executive producers and showrunners. However, in August 2020, they made the decision to separate from the streamer's adaptation.
Netflix expressed their commitment to honoring the vision for the retelling series and providing support, as stated by DiMartino in a blog post. However, despite their excitement to lead the project, unforeseen events and production challenges led them to make the difficult decision to move on.
The writer expressed optimism about Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar, acknowledging that it has the potential to be a good show that many viewers may enjoy. However, they assert that the version that ultimately appears on-screen will not align with the original vision and intentions of the show's creators, Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino.
In August 2021, the cast was announced, with Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, and Dallas Liu taking on the roles of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko, respectively. Three months later, Daniel Dae Kim joined the cast as Zuko's father, Fire Lord Ozai, and the leader of the Fire Nation.
George Takei, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Danny Pudi, and Arden Cho are among the noteworthy cast members. They lend their voices to characters such as Koh, King Bumi, the mechanist, and June, respectively.
During Netflix's 2023 Tudum event, the streaming platform provided a sneak peek of the eagerly awaited series. Alongside images of the four main actors and the show's title card, Netflix announced that the series is set to debut in 2024.
