Episode 6 of Our Flag Means Death season 2 begins with a shocking scene of torture. Inside a lighthouse, the cunning pirate captain Ned Low (played by Bronson Pinch) suspends a prisoner by his ankles and laments the fact that Blackbeard has surpassed his record of 88 consecutive raids. Ned, a former violinist turned pirate, expresses his frustration at losing his chance for a lasting legacy due to Ed's actions, and vows to seek revenge.

Having transferred all of Ed's stolen booty to a spare room aboard the Revenge, Stede takes pride in his remarkable organizational skills. In contrast, Ed views the room filled with plunder as nothing more than a chamber of guilt. That's when Stede proposes that Ed "transform poison into positivity" by utilizing his ill-gotten fortune for a noble cause. Apart from financing the invented holiday of the Revenge crew, known as Calypso's birthday, Ed generously bestows 50,000 doubloons and two knives upon two unfortunate orphans, considering himself quite magnanimous.

The Crew Celebrates Calypso’s Birthday

When Archie (Madeleine Sami) entertains her shipmates with wild party anecdotes, the original members of the Revenge crew assert that they are "loaded with fury," even if they have become somewhat dull recently. To address this, Frenchie (Joel Fry) proposes they commemorate Calypso's birthday - a fictitious holiday that conveniently allows them to throw an extravagant bash. Ed informs Stede about the crew's fabrication, but the new co-captains decide to finance the celebration to uplift morale and make good use of Ed's plunder.

Wee John & Izzy Put On A Performance

Renowned as the flame-obsessed member of the Revenge crew, Wee John (Kristian Nairn) showcases his exceptional drag persona in "Calypso's Birthday." Emulating Calypso, Wee John adorns himself with Divine-inspired makeup while assisting Izzy Hands in creating a distinctive party look that heavily features makeup. With an assertive declaration, "Raise your motherf---ing glasses — or feel my absolute wrath!" Wee John's Calypso captivates the audience. The celebration commences as Izzy enchants everyone with a delightful rendition of "La Vie en rose," illuminated by enchanting lanterns. Witnessing this, Stede turns to Ed and remarks, "I believe you have accomplished it – transforming poison into positivity."

The Crew Is Tortured By Ned Low

Unfortunately, the faux holiday is disrupted by Ned Low seeking revenge. He brings Stede and Ed to the captain's quarters to subject them to torturous pain using a hot poker. The weary musician-turned-pirate then returns to the deck of the Revenge. The hired mercenaries are engaged in torturing the rest of the crew with a variety of brutal implements from the Golden Age of Piracy. When one of Stede's curious crew members is shown an array of knives by a mercenary, she nonchalantly remarks, "I'll probably strip off your skin in little pieces or something like that." The deranged Ned Low leads the mercenaries, transforming the agonizing cries of the Revenge crew into a grotesque symphony.

Zheng Blackmails Prince Ricky Banes

In the latest episode of Our Flag Means Death season 2, Prince Ricky Banes (played by Errol Stand) delivers a powerful speech to the members of the British Royal Navy. After losing his nose to Spanish Jackie (portrayed by Leslie Jones) in the season premiere, Ricky emphasizes the importance of eradicating "modern piracy" and remaining vigilant. Inspired by Stede Bonnet's tale in episode 1, Ricky aspired to become like him and even assisted the Revenge crew in stealing Jackie's trunk of indigo dye. However, the loss of a nose inevitably alters one's perception of piracy.

After his speech, Ricky is surprised to receive an unusual delivery: a ceramic false nose. This peculiar gift turns out to be an invitation from Ruibo Qian's Zheng Yi Sao, a twist on the pirate queen in Our Flag Means Death. While Zheng doesn't conform to labels, she, along with her first mate Auntie (Anapela Polataivao), intends to blackmail Ricky Banes into supporting their cause. "I'm not interested in discussing who you currently are," Zheng informs the lesser prince. "I want to discuss who you have the potential to become." To convince Ricky to join her plan, the persuasive Zheng suggests that he could channel his animosity towards swashbucklers and become a revered advocate for pirate abolition, effectively "ending piracy without the need for violence."

Interestingly, instead of being held hostage by Ned Low's crew, Lucius (Nathan Foad) and Black Pete (Matthew Maher) have been immersed in their joyous celebration of their recent engagement below deck. However, when they become aware of the suffering endured by everyone else, they hastily gather multiple knives, though hesitant to take action. Fortunately, Stede is already steps ahead of his captors. He seizes one of the mercenaries at knifepoint and skillfully employs his persuasive abilities to turn the mercenaries against the contemptuous Ned Low. Stede astutely points out, "You perceive her as merely an employee, disregarding her true essence." These words deeply resonate with the mercenaries, leading them to completely abandon Ned Low.

Stede Kills Ned Low

Having gained the upper hand, Stede turns his attention to Ned, who continues to bully Ed. "You used to be a killer, but now you’re a washed-up, low-born dirtbag," Ned taunts Ed. Stede, refusing to tolerate such behavior, draws his sword and compels Ned, who is bound, to walk the plank. "You can’t come back from [killing in cold blood]," Ed pleads with Stede, urging him to reconsider. Desiring to be taken seriously as a pirate, Stede hurls Ned's violin at the deranged pirate musician, causing him to fall off the plank and into Davy Jones' Locker.

After his first kill, Stede retreats to his quarters, seeking solace. Ed, concerned for Stede, follows suit. Despite their prior agreement to take things slowly, Stede initiates an impassioned kiss, culminating in the couple finally consummating their relationship. As Izzy Hands aptly puts it the following morning, "Not only has the ship docked, but it has also anchored." While it is heartening to witness the couple embarking on this new chapter, it is evident that Ed, still on his journey of self-discovery, harbors some reservations about the decision.

Ed Throws Away His Leathers & Tells Stede About The Merperson Vision

In the opening of episode 7, "Man on Fire," in the second season of Our Flag Means Death, Ed places all of his leathers in a net, adds weights to the bundle, and throws it into the sea. However, Ed continues to grapple with his inner conflict regarding his pirate nature. While Spanish Jackie initially mocks his new appearance without leather, she eventually labels it as Ed going through an "If I Was A Regular Dude" phase. She also points out that Stede is experiencing the complete opposite, as he has become the trendy pirate. Later, Izzy Hands echoes Spanish Jackie's sentiments and advises Ed to follow his instincts if getting rid of his leathers, symbolizing his Blackbeard persona, felt liberating.

In an effort to assist a lovestruck Oluwande (Samson Kayo), Jim (Vico Ortiz) and Archie approach Zheng to convey their crew mate's longing for her. It is understandable that Olu had valid reasons to betray her trust in the past, as she had posed a threat to the lives of all his friends. Ed Decides To Take A Job On A Fishing Boat

Stede, having his ego greatly boosted, departs from the tavern in search of Ed. The recently adored pirate captain enthusiastically recounts how he ignited a man, causing much amusement among everyone. "I regret not witnessing your initial immolation," Ed responds, sounding somewhat detached. Stede confronts Ed when he insists that he is happy for his companion. Furthermore, Ed confesses that he considers their intimate encounter to have been a mistake; they had previously agreed to proceed with caution, yet ended up doing the complete opposite. "I am completely lost within myself," Ed admits. "Being a pirate is not something I desire." As Ed discloses that he has taken a position on a fishing vessel, Stede ridicules him and labels him a coward.

Izzy Hands Tells Stede He’s Good For Ed

In a surprising twist, Izzy Hands approaches Stede at Spanish Jackie's with an unexpected show of goodwill. This is quite remarkable considering that Izzy had previously betrayed Stede and sought his demise in the first season. Additionally, much of Izzy's frustration in the early episodes of the second season was rooted in his feelings towards Ed and Stede's relationship. Upon hearing Oluwande's decision to join Zheng, Jim and Archie eagerly seize the opportunity to join Zheng's crew. Inebriated, Stede notices the unfolding situation and accuses Zheng of poaching his crew. The situation rapidly deteriorates as Stede challenges Zheng to a fight, despite being completely outmatched by the pirate queen. Holding Stede at sword-point, Zheng confronts the Revenge's captain, labeling him as the epitome of a "mediocre man who believes he is extraordinary."

Prince Ricky Banes (Seemingly) Orchestrates An Attack On Zheng & The Republic Of Pirates

The clash between Zheng and Stede is abruptly interrupted by the striking of midnight. Earlier, in a clever foreshadowing move, Ricky Banes discreetly bestowed a grandfather clock upon Zheng's flagship, hinting at his upcoming act of betrayal. While Zheng believed she held the advantage, Prince Ricky Banes was secretly scheming an attack on her fleet and the entire Republic of Pirates. With land and sea being shaken by explosions, the pirates of the show find themselves in a heightened state of vulnerability, setting the stage for an exhilarating conclusion to the second season of Our Flag Means Death.
