Sea of Thieves players will soon embark on a long-awaited journey to a fabled pirate island that has been hidden for over three decades. This mysterious island is teeming with treacherous phantom pirates, animated skulls, valuable treasures, intoxicating rum, and peculiar rubber chickens equipped with an unusual device. Fans of adventure-packed pirate games will be delighted to accompany the legendary pirate captain, Guybrush Threepwood, in an epic Tall Tale titled Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island. Renowned game developer Rare, known for their successful fusion of their game with Pirates of the Caribbean in A Pirate's Life, once again delves into the depths of pirate mythology for inspiration.
Originally developed by LucasArts and released in 1990, The Secret of Monkey Island offers a unique blend of uproarious comedy, perplexing puzzles, and unforgettable storytelling, establishing itself as one of the greatest adventure games of all time. In recent years, Sea of Thieves has emerged as a prominent figure in the pirate genre, making the pairing of this beloved classic with the game an extraordinary fusion of nostalgia and contemporary entertainment. On July 20, players will have the thrilling opportunity to embark on the first Monkey Island-focused Tall Tale, exploring Melee Island, where Guybrush's quest for the renowned Monkey Island first began. Unlike the limitations of the early 90s, players will now have a remarkable degree of freedom to navigate the island, although certain restrictions will still apply.
Game Rant recently previewed the first of three Tall Tales in The Legend of Monkey Island, and it promises to be an unforgettable adventure. Whether it's the charming characters, captivating music, or breathtaking scenery, players are in for a hefty dose of nostalgia, especially for those who fondly recall directing Threepwood in their earlier gaming endeavors. Rare has put in commendable effort to merge the two games seamlessly, evident in every aspect of this new journey. While certain elements have been modified to fit the Sea of Thieves universe, the sheer delight of exploring Melee Island in stunning 3D can overwhelm even the most devoted Monkey Island aficionados.
There are limitations to the exploration in the game. In the preview build, if players strayed too far from certain areas, their positions would be reset to a designated position. This is necessary to maintain focus on the current Tall Tale, although it may feel strange for Sea of Thieves players who are accustomed to more freedom in exploring vast areas. Opening up the entire island all at once would be a monumental task, but hopefully future Tall Tale episodes will provide access to additional areas found on Monkey Island. Despite this limitation, standing on the top of Melee Island and catching glimpses of some well-known locations will undoubtedly be a delightful experience for many fans.
The SCUMM bar is one of the renowned locations available to players right from the beginning, evoking a blend of new and old sensations. Fans of Sea of Thieves and Monkey Island will particularly appreciate the remixes of the original music, which seamlessly integrate with the game's visuals, instilling a sense of nostalgia. The enchanting melodies, gloomy tunes, and the atmosphere of the SCUMM bar, along with other late-game locations, contribute immensely to the players' enjoyment. The sound design skillfully combines elements of the past and future, building upon the old tracks while creating fresh and captivating compositions.
However, the mixture of puzzle-solving techniques may pose a significant drawback. As puzzles must be solved using Sea of Thieves systems, players accustomed to the approach seen in Monkey Island might find it challenging to adapt. The process of physically carrying one item at a time to its destination can be time-consuming and tiresome, resulting in frequent backtracking. It can be frustrating for players to remember the exact location of an unnecessary item they dropped, only to realize they need it again after a few steps. Additionally, the puzzles themselves appear to be simpler compared to previous Tall Tales, predominantly relying on straightforward find-and-insert item scenarios. While fans of Monkey Island will appreciate the humor-infused puzzles, regular Sea of Thieves players might find them less appealing. Balancing these two aspects will undoubtedly be intriguing as the future crossovers in the Tall Tales series unfold.
The game’s new dialogue is well-written, partly due to incorporating some of the original Monkey Island scripts. There are plenty of throwbacks, but the new dialogue makes a sincere effort to capture the energy of the older titles, although with mixed results. Since the story deviates from the original game, some of the newer elements may clash slightly with the legendary narrative it draws inspiration from. These elements can include certain aspects of voice acting, although it is mainly the new characters that may feel or sound slightly out of place in their environments. However, this could simply be a result of comparing the new and old aspects of the games on equal terms. Over the years, Sea of Thieves has evolved into a highly popular pirate game in its own right, and long-time players may have a more critical perspective when comparing it to their cherished favorite.
The first episode of the Sea of Thieves and Monkey Island collaboration sets the stage for something truly magnificent. The upcoming Tall Tales will only amplify the sense of nostalgia, potentially sparking a newfound desire for a fully immersive 3D Monkey Island game. The painstaking efforts to recreate an enjoyable atmosphere and incorporate elements from the original story are commendable, inevitably prompting players to ponder the endless possibilities. While this particular Tall Tale may not be Rare's most ambitious creation to date, it holds the potential to become a favorite among fans of both games. And don't forget to inquire about Loom™ while enjoying a drink at the bar. Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island will officially launch on July 20 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Game Rant received a PC code for this exclusive preview.
