Monkey Island Meets Sea of Thieves: A Crossover Adventure

In an exciting new crossover event, Sea of Thieves is teaming up with The Legend of Monkey Island! Players can look forward to new characters and content from both franchises, brought together in a thrilling adventure on the high seas

Rare and Lucasfilm Games have announced an exciting new collaboration during the Xbox Games Showcase, which introduces a fresh story campaign for Sea of Thieves inspired by The Legend of Monkey Island. Despite a slow start upon its release in 2018, Rare has continued to enhance the game and expand its accessibility by releasing it on additional platforms like Steam. Sea of Thieves has since become a powerhouse live service, not only adding new content to the world and seasonal events but also incorporating elements from other franchises. Beginning with Microsoft franchises such as Gears of War, Banjo-Kazooie, and Ori, Rare's ambitions continued to grow in 2021 by partnering with Disney to create a free expansion focused on Pirates of the Caribbean. With fan-favorite characters like Jack Sparrow, Joshamee Gibbs, and Captain Barbossa, players were able to embark on an original story and encounter new foes. Now, after a few years, Rare is set to unveil their latest collaboration.

At the 2023 Xbox Showcase Event, Sea of Thieves unveiled an exciting new crossover collaboration with Monkey Island through a captivating trailer. Players will embark on an adventure on Melee Island, where they will encounter iconic characters, such as Guybrush Threepwood, who serves as the Mayor. Similar to Jack Sparrow, Threepwood will be a fully functional NPC, and players will team up with him to unravel the mystery of LeChuck, who has imprisoned the island's memories.

The trailer also revealed that players will confront LeChuck, the series' long-standing villain, and hinted at several cinematic moments awaiting them. The Monkey Island crossover will be free for players and will feature a brand new original storyline to experience. Fans can mark their calendars for July 20 when the Sea of Thieves x Monkey Island event will kick off in grand style.

Sea of Thieves has a longstanding connection to the Monkey Island franchise, as evidenced by the Easter egg hidden in The Pirate's Life expansion. The shipwreck of Captain Kate Capsize, last seen in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, was discovered by players and theorized to be seeking revenge against Threepwood before ultimately getting lost and stranded in Sea of Thieves. The recent Monkey Island crossover has brought this Easter egg full circle, further cementing the ties between the two beloved pirate franchises. Sea of Thieves is currently available for play on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
