Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045, directed by Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki, is the fourth installment in the animated series. In SAC, the focus is on Section 9 as a crime-fighting unit facing various criminal threats, while in GIS, the emphasis is on Kusanagi as a solo crime-fighter striving to apprehend a single criminal mastermind.

The debut of Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 took place on Netflix in 2020, comprising a 12-episode first season. Set in 2045, the story follows the aftermath of the events in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society, occurring 11 years later. In this new era, Kusanagi and her team confront the grim reality of a "sustainable war" involving China, Russia, the European Union, and the United States. Rather than employing human soldiers, these powerful nations rely on artificial intelligence (AI) and technology-enhanced humans referred to as "post-humans". However, some of these post-humans deviate from their intended purpose and exploit the ongoing global conflict for personal gain. Equipped with superior bodies and cutting-edge AI capabilities, these post-humans prove to be the most perilous adversaries Kusanagi and her team have ever encountered. In the May 2022 debut of the second season, the team has accomplished the reinstatement as a government unit.
