The long-awaited indie dungeon crawler, Dark and Darker, is now available for early access, surprising fans with a sudden announcement from the developer. However, due to Nexon's ongoing lawsuit against Ironmace, the game cannot be played on Steam.
Dark and Darker, developed by the Korean indie studio Ironmace, is a multiplayer dungeon crawler that combines the elements of roguelike exploration with battle royale gameplay. Players can choose from seven character classes and engage in exciting PvPvE combat, facing off against monsters while defending against other players. Additionally, Dark and Darker falls under the subgenre of extraction games, alongside popular titles such as Escape from Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown, and Bungie's upcoming Marathon reboot. Unfortunately, Ironmace has faced plagiarism accusations from Nexon, a well-known Korean company famous for publishing MapleStory.
After Ironmace surprised everyone with an announcement this morning, Dark and Darker is now available in early access. However, the game cannot be found on Steam anymore, as Valve has removed it due to ongoing legal challenges. Fans who wish to play Dark and Darker can download it from the official website at www.darkanddarker.com or from a storefront known as Chaf Games. However, some users have expressed concerns about Chaf's security. Interestingly, Dark and Darker is not yet available in Ironmace's home country, as it still hasn't received a rating from the Korean Game Rating Board.
The Standard Edition of Dark and Darker is priced at $35, while the Founder’s Edition is available for $50 and includes additional in-game content. Additionally, Dark and Darker features an in-game shop, but Ironmace CEO Terence Park ensures that the company will not engage in predatory tactics such as loot boxes or FOMO.
Despite its removal from Steam, the developer of Dark and Darker remains hopeful for its eventual return. In April, Ironmace's lawyers requested Valve to reinstate the game, and Park recently expressed the company's commitment to continuing their efforts. Park stated in an email to PC Gamer, "We cannot overlook the largest PC storefront in the world." Furthermore, Ironmace postponed the early access release of Dark and Darker until today due to its removal from Steam.
Ironmace is facing legal issues due to allegations by Nexon that Ironmace's employees stole assets from a game called P3, which was later used in the creation of Dark and Darker. Ironmace strongly denies any use of copyrighted material and the developers of Dark and Darker have dismissed Nexon's accusations as unfounded. In response, Ironmace's legal team has accused Nexon of engaging in "anti-competitive bully tactics" and intentionally trying to financially harm Ironmace. Despite Ironmace's denials, it is unlikely that Dark and Darker will be available on Steam until the lawsuit has been resolved. Currently, Dark and Darker can be accessed in its early access version on PC.
