In a May 2017 interview with Miami's Power 96.5 FM, Gomez expressed her tendency to love intensely, stating, "I'm the kind of girl that loves tremendously big. I just have always been that girl. I will give my heart and my soul to the person that I love. It's just how I operate."
Two years later, Gomez spoke about the challenges of maintaining a normal human relationship as a celebrity. "To be honest, it's so cliché. Everyone dates everyone," she told Apple Music's Beats 1 in January 2020. "It always seems to be within a little bubble because it's safe, right? You're looking for someone who understands what you're going through. You also want someone who shares your creativity. It's interesting and fun."
After a series of ups and downs with Bieber and other boyfriends, Gomez embraced her time alone, telling The Wall Street Journal in January 2020 that she had been single for over two years.

The Disney Channel stars were in a relationship back in 2008. "We were babies," she shared with Capital FM in September 2015. "That, to me, was like puppy love, you know. It was very sweet." "He would visit her, so we were constantly running into each other in the lobby - and we ended up meeting.
